How to Turn your Flat Screen TV into Wall Art
Ranked #10,670 in Home & Garden, #142,244 overall
A television is used daily by most families and so it often occupies a prominent place in a family room or living room. A few years ago, many people would hide their TV inside an armoire or entertainment unit, but newer and larger flat screen TVs are designed to be hung directly on the wall and are usually to large to fit inside your old armoire.
One of the problems in trying to decorate around these flashy, large flat screens is that it can be difficult to get them to blend in with their surroundings. While they have a cool technological appearance, this look might not work with your room or, just by its sheer size and presence, the TV may be too much of a focal point, and not a very attractive one at that. Some people try to disguise their wall mounted TV with elaborate custom made entertainment units that include doors, curtains or roll-up devices that cover the screen when it's not in use. There are even remote control devices that let you hide a TV screen behind a work of art. These are great options if you have the money to spend on them, but many people would prefer a more affordable alternative. In this case, a method that you might consider would be to treat your TV like a decorative accessory and turn it into stylish wall art.

Include the TV in a Wall Art Arrangement
If you treat the TV as an element within a wall grouping you can often make it blend into the rest of your décor. This approach is especially effective if you use abstract art because the TV will blend into the non-literal grouping; abstract art will also be less distracting in close proximity to the TV when it is being viewed. Since the TV is large, your best bet is to choose several smaller pieces of art to flank or group on each side of the screen. For wall decoration ideas, consider a long vertical artwork or decorative wall sconces with curved or scrolled designs on either side to break up the boxy lines of the TV.
A Shelf Display or Built-In Look
Even though you mount your TV directly on the wall, you can install a floating shelf below the TV so that it doesn't appear to be drifting aimlessly across the wall. This has the effect of grounding the set visually and you can use the ends of the shelf for plants, framed art and photos, accessories or books. You can expand on this approach by adding shelves on either side of the TV, so that it appears to be part of a built-in wall arrangement. Add artwork and accessories to the shelves and the TV is just another element in the design. You can either build the unit yourself or purchase component entertainment systems to create the configuration you desire.Photo used under Creative Commons from Alan_D.
An Architectural Approach
Another idea is to make the space surround the TV a little more interesting. You might build a frame around the TV that matches other trim in the room. You can use crown molding on the top of the frame for a dimensional shelf. Wall paper borders, stenciled artwork, wrought iron grilles and wood plaques are other means of adding some dimension to the wall that surrounds your big flat TV screen.

- Great ideas - I'd never consider a TV an eyesore, per se, but turning them into art is a great idea.
