Editing with AVCHD video from HD Camcorders

I recently purchased a new Sony Handycam HDR-SR11. Once I had some good things recorded, I began to research the AVCHD files that it creates and found some great ways to edit these HD files. Here is what I found.

Here is the Camera I Bought

This is the camera I'm using. The native video format is AVCHD. This is a great camera! It's really easy to use and has a ton of features. Plus the video quality is incredible! Here is a great review at Amazon.

Editing Software

There are a lot of choices for editng AVCHD video. The biggest obstacle is to find the one that does it well. If your using the Sony Camera from above there is software that included to import the files to your pc. I found that it works fine but the files are not easily imported into other programs for editing. Here are some programs I found that work.

My Process

My goal was to take a show of about an hour long, edit it and make a dvd.

I started with the Sony Vegas Software to capture the files. Then used it to convert the AVCHD file into an mpeg 2 file that I used for editing.

Next I imported the new file into Ulead's VideoStudio and exported the DVD to disc.
