How to learn paid search

Ranked #17,557 in Internet, #556,799 overall

Why most people shouldn't start right into paid search

The thought of buying traffic and profiting quickly is so enticing that scammers have made a career out of generating new eBooks and training courses on the subject almost daily. This is unfortunate because there are useful and important functions of paid search in rolling out both online and offline businesses.

For one thing paid search can be a quick way to test the attractiveness of various business names or domain names by running advertisements using them before investing a lot of time and money into them. And paid search can be a great way to determine what keywords convert best in your business before you invest a lot of time into building pages optimized for organic search.

The downside of course is that someone new to the business of paid search can quickly lose a fair amount of money before gaining any actionable intelligence.

Get focused training in paid search

Organization, tracking, focus, and discipline are the major keys to success

When you venture into paid search you don't want to be sloppy about it. Being sloppy is what has cost many people hundreds of dollars quickly and forced them to give up on one of the most important traffic drivers for both online and offline businesses.

This is one of the reasons I highly recommend Matt Levenhagen's Campaign Blasts system for anyone considerng learning the intricacies of pay per click marketing.

Matt is a nice guy, but he is also a very realistic teacher who will tell you straight up that if you are going to be successful in your business you are going to have to develop a system of weekly reporting, tracking, and planning in order to reach profit levels that you want to achieve.

And regardless of what training you end up starting out with you absolutely must learn from a system that is based on those same principles. It may be offputting for you to think like a serious business person, but if you are going to truly find success in your business there really is no other way to go.

Another popular training course for paid search

Although quite popular, proceed with caution

Another extremely popular training course for paid search is the Wealthy Affiliate membership. While I agree that it's impressive and comprehensive, it can also be overwhelming to someone new to running a business - whether it's a traditional bricks and mortar business, a business focused on eCommerce or one that uses an affiliate business model.

It's certainly possible to stay organized, focused, and disciplined using their membership, but it can also be more of a challenge, because of the sheer volume of information and tools you receive. My rule of thumb and recommendation for anyone considering learning to drive traffic with paid search is that they must know what their long-term business obejctives are before investing in training.

And by long-term business objectives i do NOT mean "make some money". I mean what is going to drive your ability to get up day in and day out and keep your focus and discipline? That really is incredibly important.

Books to help you learn marketing via paid search

A decent selection from Amazon

While books published via traditional distribution channels are often weaker than self-published books in the area of marketing, it would be foolhardy to avoid them altogether. Some excellent books come out each year that are worth a look to see if they are relevant to your long-term vision for your business.
