How to Potty Train a Dachshund

How to potty train your Dachshund is one of the most important steps a Dachshund owner should learn. Is your Dachshund not housebroken? You are not alone! Imagine no more mess in the house, no more worrying and stress for you or your Dachshund. It is easy! With the right information, fully housebreaking a Dachshund is possible in a few short weeks.

The Teckel Tickle

However, we kept failing! What were we doing wrong? We have had dogs before but this was our first Dachshund.

Our Dachshund would not stop peeing in the house and we were getting frantic!

We were not able to take him with us when we visited friends - it was too embarrassing!

We did not want to keep him in his cage when we were home.

We were following him everywhere in the house.

We just wanted to play with our little cutie without worrying about him peeing.

We were getting fed up of failing!

We looked for information on how to potty train a Dachshund - we searched everywhere looking for the best way. For us most of the tips we found just did not work.

At last a friend recommended Dachshund Training
In a couple of weeks we had learned how to potty train our Dachshund.

Here are a few of the tips that worked for us:

Praised him EVERY time he peed in the right place.

Used a command EVERY time we wanted him to pee - we used "go potty".

Took him outside EVERY time he woke-up, eat, or stopped playing.

Are you getting to see a pattern here?

Dachshunds need hearing the same thing repeatedly until they get it right.

We also noticed that his signal to want to go out was very subtle but it was there. Unlike other breeds that may scratch or yelp at the door our Dachshund would just swivel his eyes and look at the door. It took us a long time to notice this - mainly because we were not looking for it. Look for your Dachshunds signal - it is there but like I said may be hard to spot at first.
