- Shampoo-Is It Worth The Risk? -
A shocking article concerning dangerous, and potentially life threatening ingredients within our shampoos and our babies. How do the manufacturers get away with exposing us to dangerous chemicals within our beauty products?
- Shampoo Is It Worth The Risk? -
This is quite an important subject, and something that I have been thinking about a lot recently. I have become aware through the press, that the treatment recommended for school children with head lice is now found to be potentially harmful. So that got me thinking, if that treatment enters through the pores, and can cause cancer, what about my shampoo, does that contain harmful chemicals also?
Well after doing my research I have come up with some pretty scary and conclusive evidence that chemicals used in shampoos can be extremely harmful to you.- Read on.-
Firstly shampoo contains Formaldehyde This chemical is a known carcinogenic (Cancer inducing). It is a very toxic and dangerous chemical. It permeates the skin and it has the possibility to cause serious problems to your health. Basically formaldehyde is a substance that shouldn't be breathed in or touched. This toxic chemical reacts with body tissues, being: the skin, Lungs, and eyes. Shampoo with this chemical in can cause damage to the cornea, cataracts , and in the severe case can lead to blindness.
It's strange actually, because I recently had to pay a visit to the eye hospital because of a recurrent pain in my left eye. After examination the doctor asked me had I got anything in my eye recently? Such as shampoo? Which I actually had. I thought this was an odd thing to ask, but I now realize that opticians and doctors must be well aware of the problems that shampoo, and hair conditioners can cause. I had in fact damaged my cornea, and have been told I may no longer wear contact lenses for the foreseeable future.
Government bodies whose job it is to look after the safety of their publics health are suffering from a conflict of interest when potentially dangerous drugs enter the market. They are compromised because of personal investments or affiliations with the chemical/drug industries. It's all masked and stifled, and I hate to think what else we don't know about. I remember when GM (Genetically modified) food suddenly had to carry a description, when all the time it had been going on and we knew nothing about it, or that it was contained within our food.
Formaldehyde can aggravate, and can even bring on asthma, and in the severe case can actually cause permanent damage to the lungs. "It is used in agriculture as a foot rot treatment for sheep and cattle and also as an embalming fluid to preserve bodies. Safety warning labels advise users to wear protective clothing, face mask and gloves. If it comes in contact with the skin to wash off with copious quantities of water and to seek medical advice! Accidental spillage on skin may cause irreversible health effects! If swallowed induce vomiting and seek immediate medical help!" Obviously the levels in shampoo will be diluted somewhat, but these findings are still a great worry to the consumer at large, and more worryingly formaldehyde is used in children's products such as: shampoo and bubble bath.-
Another chemical contained within our shampoo is Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). This chemical is a hormone-disrupting chemical, and is a harsh detergent commonly used as an engine degreaser and garage floor cleaner. It really is not too good reading all this and it makes me seriously consider actually trying to make my own shampoo made from natural ingredients. Why are the government allowing these dangerous chemicals into our beauty products without some warning as you would get on Tobacco and cigarettes?- WARNING: This shampoo could induce Cancer!.- Dramatic maybe, but the harmful effects of tobacco were covered up for quite some time, the government thinking they would lose too much money if the findings were disclosed.
Some people are allergic to chemicals, and some even have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and they have the right to know what chemicals are included in a product. Studies carried out have stated that it is possible that formaldehyde can cause cancer of the lungs and respiratory tract in humans, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers formaldehyde a probable human carcinogen. Which is a very scary prospect, and something I am sure that not many of us are even aware of. - "Some of the most dangerous chemicals we put on our bodies in the name of beauty belong to a family of hormone-disrupting chemicals, which are water soluble ammonia derivatives."
I have only touched on two of the most harmful chemical additives in shampoo. There are some far more harmful synthetic cocktails contained within our daily skincare and hair care regime that we are not even aware of, as they are not labeled upon the container. I think the message that I have got from all of this, is that it is quite frightening what ingredients and chemicals our beauty products contain. I think I have already answered the question of 'How dangerous are the chemicals in our shampoo? - Surely in this day and age there has to warnings printed upon our products, so that we, the consumers know what we are putting into our bodies, and more importantly, so that we have the 'choice', which is our god given right as a human being.-

Note that some of that stuff is in toothpaste, too. (I use soap.) I even bought natural shampoo for my dog and it has made a huge difference. Important information here! Thumbs up from this SquidAngel! Posted September 21, 2008 |

This is so true! I have actually been researching this exact topic because for the last 2 months I've been dealing with a miserable allergic reaction rash and have been trying to identify the cause. (If you decide to add more links for consumers I found thegreenguide.com very helpful for dangerous product ingredient lists.) 5 Stars! Posted May 04, 2008 |
