How I met my husband in an MMO

True love can be found anywhere..really!

I thought it would be fun to share the crazy story about how my husband and I met, since he lived in Sweden and I lived in California. It couldn't have happened any other way.

I've never heard of an MMORPG

You mean real people are in here, like... talking to each other?

A friend of mine introduced me to a video game called Star Wars Galaxies one day and I, being a Star Wars fan from way back thought, "Wow, this looks really fun." You buy a game, create an online account and then create your own customized character or avatar that you play as a representation of you in a virtual world with tens of thousands of other real people.

At first I was so newbish, but soon I was having a great time and it wasn't long before I met the fellow who would eventually become my husband.

I thought I heard you say..Sweden

Wow the world just got a lot smaller!

I played online with my soon-to-be husband (although I didn't know it at the time) along with all of our other friends for about a year before I even realized he was in
Sweden. "OMG!.. I thought you lived in Boston" Oh well, we were just friends anyway, I had never known any Swedes before. What a bunch of nuts!

Dating in a virtual world

Apparently you can date and get married too.

Some MMORPG's have methods for you to actually get married to other players in game. We had been playing together for over a year, leveling up our characters, setting up houses, making lifelong friendships. Since we and all of our online friends shared a voice over IP server that allowed us to be connected using a headset and microphone, we got to know each other better than our own families and real life friends.

We held a big in game wedding and invited all of our friends. There was a cake, music and the justice of the peace was a Jedi. Some of our most treasured memories were created in a place that existed in a make believe world.
In time, we moved on to play other MMO's together. We played Everquest II, for a while and then moved on to World of Warcraft. We had always wanted to meet in person, but it seemed like an impossible task.

It was time to meet

One of us had to get on a plane

So it was me. After a whole year of maintaining an online virtual relationship with a man over 6000 miles away, we decided we have to meet. We made plans for me to fly to Stockholm and stay with some mutual friends in his home town. I have never been so nervous in my whole life. Counting the days, the more I thought about it the more horrified I became and he was experiencing the same thing.
Finally the departure date was upon me. I took my dog to stay with some friends and got on an airplane to Stockholm. Was he actually going to be at the airport when I arrived? I hope so. I never would have done it except for the things that I was certain of. We had gotten to know each other over a 2 year period and we had a very close network of trustworthy people around us. But it was still the scariest thing in the world to be doing.

Needless to say, he was there when I landed. When we met for the first time it was like magic. It felt as though all of our fears just melted away. We spent two blissful weeks together. He was better than I could have ever dreamed. We had already seen each others pics and giggled at each other on our webcams but nothing compared to our first kiss. We embarrassed ourselves and had a wonderful time and when it was time for me to go, I left my heart there with him. We both cried out eyes out.

Reunited

It didn't take long before we were married in real life. It's going on three years now and it feels just like the day we met. Sure, we have had to struggle at times, but when you're in love it doesn't matter. We don't really have a lot of time to play MMO's much nowadays. We have decided that it would be better to spend our online time together finding ways to supplement our income instead of paying to play games. But since we spent so much time together really getting to know each other as individuals, we never run out of things we have in common.

Who would have ever imagined. It is true, life is better than fiction.

Visit Stockholm, you'll love it.

Swedes love Americans

Many Americans often overlook Scandinavia when it comes to choosing an exciting destination. I myself, even though I worked in the travel industry for over 20 years had never visited there. If it wasn't for my husband, I may have never had the joy of seeing the beauty of the country and it's people. Swedes are exuberant, funny, full of life and they enjoy having American visitors.

The next time you're planning your vacation, think of Sweden. You will not be dissapointed and who knows, you might even meet your soul mate.

This is not your usual lens on travel, but who's to complain. It's not often travel to Sweden includes bringing back a husband. Thanks for joining "Anything and Everything Travel" Group.
