The Straight Cut

There are two ways how to cut ceramic tile straight. You can use a tile cutter, also known as a snap cutter or a rail cutter, to score the tile and then break it. This is similar to the tool that's used by professionals to cut VCT tile.
To use the snap cutter, first score the tile by bringing the cutting wheel across it. Then move the tile so that the tile cutter's nubs are on top of the tile. Push the cutter down to snap the tile.
You can also use a wet diamond saw to cut ceramic tile. This is much easier, though you will have to own one or rent it for your project. Professional tile setters use a wet saw because it is the fastest way to cut a lot of tiles, but if you are doing your own DIY job you can get by with a snap cutter.
It's a good idea to buy a few extra cheap tiles to practice using your ceramic tile cutting tools before doing real cuts.

The Notch Cut

A notch cut is when you have a cut that comes off of the edge of the tile.
Of all the cuts, the notch cut will weaken the tile the most.

The Hole Cut

The hole cut is the most difficult of all ceramic tile cuts because you have to cut out of the middle of the tile.
If you are just getting used to how to cut ceramic tile, you shouldn't try to do a hole cut first.
