How to Get Rid of Ringworm

Ringworm is Easy to Catch
Ringworm is a fungal infection that is not only contagious, it is pretty embarrassing. There are so many ways to catch it, too: touching someone who has the infection, touching your pets that might have carried it in from outside, or even brushing up against something that has been infested with the fungus. Jock itch and athlete's foot are also forms of ringworm that infects certain unnamed parts of the body. I have heard of people catching these infections by sharing showers and even toilets. You can even catch it from the spores mingling among dirty clothes in your hamper.
I recently got a case of ringworm on the inside of my thigh close to a moving joint. This was a problem because I work a job where I am moving for eight or more hours per day. This means that whatever product I put on the infection had a hard time staying on that area because it was rubbed off by my clothes or skin rubbing against skin. The following is a chronicle of my frustrating three month journey to curing this irritating rash.

Expired Over the Counter Cream
It was in the Closet for a While
I happened to have some over the counter cream in the closet from the last time I caught ringworm. I didn't remember that case being all that bad. That occurrence was several years ago and the topical cream that I had just past its expiration date. I thought to myself, this stuff should still work. They only put the expiration date on there so you'd go and buy more. So I applied it twice a day for two weeks, covering it with a bandage every single time.
These kinds of creams apparently loose some, if not all their effectiveness over long periods of time. On my small spot of ringworm (smaller than that of a dime) it helped it fade away. Here was my mistake though. The bandage I was using had some pretty strong adhesive. It was important that the bandage stay in place because of where the ring was located. Thinking it might hurt less if I ripped the bandage off quickly and easy it might not hurt as much. It didn't hurt as bad, but it did pull the top layer of skin off opening the area up to catch the ringworm.
After a few more days of the cream, the original spot had all but disappeared, but I had grown two larger spots on either side of the original area. Both were larger than the original and were starting to itch.

Rubbing Alcohol
Nice, Cool and Soothing
When the cream didn't seem to be working, I started to wipe down the area with rubbing alcohol. I read online that applying it twice a day would help to make it go away. To keep from spreading the ringworm to the bottle or anything else I was using, I soaked q-tips in the alcohol and rubbed it over the infected area.I will tell you now. It burned. My thought pattern was I could deal with the burning if only the infection would heal and go away. Needless to say, it didn't go away. I tried if for several days. I don't know if I w as doing something wrong. If I were to do it again I might soak a piece of cotton in the alcohol and tape it down over the spot.
Clear Nail Polish
Another home remedy I read about was to completely cover the area with clear nail polish twice a day. The object of this remedy was to suffocate the fungus. When it died of asphyxiation, the body would clean up the mess and clear up the spot.
I tried this for over two weeks, and yes, it burned, too. The thing to remember is to use a q-tip to apply. Don't ever double dip the q-tip because you might infest the nail polish with the ringworm. Then you might spread it to other parts of your body, or to someone else if they use the nail polish.
The first week, the two spots that had each grown to a half dollar area on my thigh started to fade. The only problem was the nail polish would not stay on the spot because of my constant movement at work. Then there was the trouble of removing the old polish to apply new polish.
For a while I was just applying the new polish over the cracked and broken old polish. Now the ringworm had faded from the original spot and had settled in to the area closest to the joint. This made it difficult to treat. Then no matter how I applied the nail polish it continued to grow. I was so frustrated. I had this infection for nearly two months at this point.

Finally Went to the Doctor
At this point, I had given up. I was trying not to spend money on going to see the doctor and having a prescription filled. I went anyway. I waited for nearly an hour just to go in, tell the doc I had ringworm. She looked at it briefly and agreed and wrote a script. I was diagnosed and kicked out within fifteen minutes. We won't talk about how much I spent to have the doctor look at me for that little bit of time.
I had the prescription filled and started applying it to the spot that had grown to the size of an orange. It was way to large to cover with a bandage at this point. I was just making sure I was changing clothes regularly and washing them in hot water to kill any spores that might have found their way into the hamper.
I will say%u2026 the cream helped. It was a ten day treatment. At the end of the ten days, the ring was no longer visible. I had a large red spot that didn't itch anymore. It wasn't completely gone after the two weeks I was applying the prescription cream. That was when I finally decided to call in help from some of the matriarchs in the family.

Lime or Tobacco?
I contacted one of older women of my family and asked them about how they dealt with ringworm. They told me of a home remedy they used often. They would smoke half a cigarette, then open it up and rub the unused tobacco onto the spot and let the chemicals absorb into the skin. From what I understand, you will have a reaction to the nicotine almost like you were smoking the cigarette. The chemicals will kill the fungus almost immediately. She said that I probably would not have to apply it more than twice before it went away.
The problem was, I am not a smoker. I thought I might bum a cigarette off a buddy from work, but before I did, she called me back and told me that one of her friends said Limes would do the same thing. I decided to try the lime first.
I bought the lime from the grocery store for fifty cents. I cut a disc of lime, like you see those women on TV in the spas do. They lay a disc some kind of fruit over their eyes. I laid the disc of lime over the worst spot on my leg. It burned as the acidic juices seeped out of the lime and into the infection. I let it sit there for nearly fifteen minutes.
I tried to do this twice a day for another week and a half. When I didn't have the time to lay the lime, I applied what I had left of the prescription cream. When I ran out of the prescription cream, I sprayed on an athlete's foot spray that was in the closet. Finally the entire thing faded away. It only took three months for me to make it go away. I think it was a combination of the disinfectant properties of the lime and the staying power of the prescription cream that finally made it disappear. I hope I never have another infection like that again.

- I have been battling ringworm for over two weeks now. I have tried many different things with no success. When one seemed to be clearing up another popped up next to it! The itching is the worst!
Last night out of desperation I tried something I remembered while working in a machine shop, There as a quick fix for poison ivy, I used (yes, I know it is wrong) small grit sandpaper and poured acetone over it. (it worked)
I rubbed the ringworm with nail polish remover, let dry and rubbed it with tea tree oil! This morning when I felt it begin to itch a little I reapplied both acetone and oil. It instantly stops the itch and the redness is gone!! I can barely tell where they are! I hope this helps someone else because I am extremely happy its going away!

- I currently have one. It used to be a size of a dime. I was out of the country so I decided to cover it with bandage to avoid it from spreading. That was a wrong move. Now I have a ringworm triple the size of the diameter of the dime with a frame of blisters that might or might not be infected by the ringworm. The doctor gave me prescription to be placed on my infected skin by 6 weeks. I am on my 3rd week now but I am getting frustrated. Other home ready I asked from my coworkers were: bleach and when dried up, use calamine lotion. I also use hydrogen peroxide to clean and sometimes the nizoral shampoo (since it had antifungal components).. also try the fluocianide (some chinese ointment my parents gave me).. Man I hope this will be gone before summer comes.. It kills my social life and had to wear long sleeves to cover the gross look:( now I am all paranoid for the thing to spread to my face (since it is on my forearm) or anywhere else on my body..one is already enough!

- Use a Cut Lime. That is what worked for me. It works within days and not weeks. I held the lime on my spot for about 10 minutes once or twice a day for a few days. It killed the fungus.

- It took about 3-5 days for my case of ringworm to go away. Mine did not peel, it just faded away. I suggest you keep going for a few more days as long as it is not bleeding. If it is bleeding, I suggest you go see a real dr. I am not one. I just told the story about what I experienced. Let me know how it goes.

- I can tell you the alcohol method doesn't work. I've tried that a couple of years ago when I had this small patch on my left arm. It didn't sting as much but it was pretty useless. I used Lotrimin otc if I remember correctly, and it went away after 3 weeks or so. This post might be of interest to your readers:

- The nail polish only works on a small infection and only if it is in a spot that does not get rubbed all day. When I had it is was in a joint so the nail polish did not stay on very long. I finally used the lime. That worked in 3 days. Try the lime. It is great stuff.

- I just recently got ringworm within the past week. I didn't have a clue that it could have been ringworm when I first noticed the spot on my inner forearm. It itched like crazy! after a couple days of it being there and me itching it, I now have another one on my thigh. Today I found out that it's probably ringworm.
I've been researching how to get rid of it for awhile and the two things that I've found that people say work best is nailpolish or bleach. I've been putting triple antibotic cream on it for a couple days, come to find out that antibotics will not work. I'm kinda worried about trying the bleach thing as some people said it burns your skin. So I just now put some more of the triple antibotic cream on both places and then put clear nailpolish and covered it with a bandaid. It does burn, but it's bearable and I hate pain so it must not be that bad.
I'll post tomorrow any changes, but keep in mind that I've only had it for less than a week.

- Well the ringworm on my thigh, the smaller of the 2 that i have, seems to be going away and it's been less than 24hrs that I applied the nail polish. I just use nailpolish remover on a paper towel and pressed it on the spot for 10 minutes to remove the polish. then reapplied it.
The larger and first one that is on my arm doesn't seem to be changing at all. I put some more nail polish on that one just now also.

- On the worse case of ringworm, nail pollish didn't work for me. I placed a slice of lime over the spot for several minutes twice a day. It went away in 2 days when I did that. Try lime. I found it worked faster than Nail polish. It will burn. Be aware.
