The Bichon Frise has always and will continue to remain one of the most popular companion breeds. As with most popular breeds, many dog lovers will bring a Bichon Frise into their home without considering the responsibilities ownership entails. Known for its teddy bear like appearance, the Bichon Frise requires consistent grooming to maintain its appeal.

The purpose of this article is to help potential Bichon Frise owners understand how to groom a Bichon Frise puppy. It is hoped that by reading this article they will be prepared to make an informed decision before purchasing this loveable dog.

In grooming your Bichon Frise puppy it is important that you brush your new addition daily. This will prevent having to wrestle out snarls and matted hair frustrating both the owner and the Bichon Frise. A slicker brush should be used throughout puppyhood. This is not the typical pin brush you see in pet stores. Slicker brushes consist of very thin "pins" that are specifically made for shorter hair. Below is a picture of a slicker brush. This is a high quality slicker brush that will last you for years. It is important to buy quality pet grooming products for your Bichon Frise. The great thing is a slicker brush is very inexpensive.

Groomers Dream Slicker Brush

While it may be more convenient to groom your Bichon Frise puppy on the floor or couch it is crucial that you learn how to groom your Bichon Frise on a grooming table. You must start early in getting your Bichon Frise puppy accustomed to sitting on the table. This will work to your benefit when the Bichon Frise becomes an adult.

Lay your Bichon Frise on its side on the grooming table. It is important to train the puppy to stay on its side. Not doing so will lead to trouble in their adult years.

While on its side make a part in the Bichon Frise puppy's hair on its side. Spend time brushing to the left and right of the part until any snags are out. Move to the back and make a part as before. Continue brushing out the snags by moving the brush to the left and right of the part. Next, brush the puppy's legs. This is done by creating a part at the top of the leg and working down. Be sure to get under the puppy's upper leg as matting occurs easily there.Turn the puppy over on its other side and repeat.

Stand the puppy up to brush the chest and tail. Brushing these areas should be done gently. Also, it is important to pay attention to the genitalia and anus when brushing.

Another wise practice is to take your Bichon Frise puppy to a professional groomer regularly. The reason being that as your Bichon Frise gets older and professional grooming is required the dog will be used to being left at the groomer for periods of time. Not doing this could potentially upset the Bichon Frise when introduced to the groomer as an adult. This can be a very traumatic experience and cause a temperament change.
