What Do You Think of Wooden Gear Clocks?

I bet there are a bunch of different opinions

From the lens How to Make a Wooden Gear Clock.

I am so happy that so many of you have an interest in wooden gear clocks. I find the subject is fun to read about, but I would love to see more people sit down and start building one. Building a wooden clock feels like a right of passage to me. I would like to know what you think.

Maybe you collect clocks. Maybe you take pictures of interesting and different clocks. Maybe you just like to know how they work. I want to know these stories.

I'd love to build a clock. I am always tinkering with machines and gadgets, and I am most interested in learning how to mill my own gears. I do have an advantage of living near the Kew Bridge Steam Museum where I can see many machines in action. You could do with managing your links a bit better - it looks like a spammy thing has crept in there. Now I may be able to get a small amount of time on a laser cutter - I'd love to see what I could do with one for gears. For getting to know gears, Lego has a good selection of things, but not an escapement, although I have seen Lego clocks.

I don't like wearing watches, but if I did, it would be a visible movement type.

They are great project. I think the biggest problem will be finding the right kind of wood. It must not be too hard, too soft, too elastic... You will probably have to 'invent' some special tools too (or at least adapt existing ones). Enjoy!

I have looked at the different books on wooden clock making, but haven't decided to give it a try yet. Maybe someday I will in as much as that kind of project would be real scroll saw art. Thanks for the great information.

This was a very interesting post and I found myself spending the most time in the gears section. I never how cool combining so many different ratios can be, telling different phases or planets along with just second hours and minutes... calendars integrated, star chart. I love it... all through gears. Thanks for the resource!

Dear Robert, I responded to your comment on my lens, 'Brilliant Inventions you need NOW' with a link to this one. (RE: your interest in the white bedside table/dresser design). I can 'smell the wood burning' now. Don't work too hard, my Squidoo friend. You are just recovering from your Haiku challenge. Thank you for being an inspiration. Take good care, Rose

Lensrolled to my: Healthy Gifts for 2011...Yay!, Squidoo people with a good heart (earn up to 278 points) and Healthy Gifts for Pets and People you Adore lenses. A wooden gear clock would make an wonderful keepsake. Who wouldn't want a handmade clock from their mom or dad to keep and give to a grandchild someday?
  • sousababy Mar 12, 2011 @ 8:41 am | delete
Oh I love this . . I didn't think it was possible to do before I read this. What a fantastic project to teach the kids (just make sure to keep them away from the scroll saw, wear eye protection and gloves). I revere hand-crafted items so much more as I get older. Well researched and your explanations/video choices are easy to understand. Must put this one in the sidebar of my 'Squidoo people with a good heart' lens. Hope it helps! Rose

Congrats on your 1st Purple Star. This is a very Interesting project! It sure would be challenging to get the gears in the correct position. My dad and my hubby have made burl clocks (cut and finished the wood) but with a clock kit. :)

This is such a good lens. My son, when he was about ten, was given a book from which you could make a cardboard clock. He never succeeded, being a little too young, but boy did he enjoy trying. I shall see if I can interest him in this lens now he is 38!! Blessed by a squid angel and featured on Me?!! A Squid Angel.

This is so cool! I know I would never do it. I'm not at all good with wood and hate knifes and saws, but the lens is really cool and if your good with wood working, it would be neat to do! Blessed by a Squid Angel.
