7 Tips For Using Rewards Credit Cards

1. Rewards cards don't reward if you carry a balance from month to month. When you use a rewards credit card, it's typical for the card to have a higher interest rate than a non-rewards credit card. If you are carrying a balance from month to month instead of paying it off at the end of each month, you're not likely to earn anything from the rewards after you pay out the interest.
2. What does "Up to" mean? You know you've seen it. Rewards credit cards that advertise cash back "up to" 1%. That means you might actually earn much less than 1% cash back, until you reach very high levels of spending on your card.
3. How much are cardholders paying for the rewards? Most credit card shoppers are comparing the points earned on various rewards cards, or the gift cards you receive. The best thing you can do is figure out how much those points or rewards are costing the cardholder. If you have to spend $10,000 in a year to get a $50 gift card- is it really worth it?
4. Frequent flyer miles are great rewards programs for people who charge a lot of purchases on their credit cards. If you don't, you'll be waiting years before you can qualify for your free flight. If you're an occasional spender with credit cards, you should probably look at credit cards that offer rewards at lower levels of spending in order to take advantage of rewards.
5. Understand what a gas station is. Gas rewards credit cards are extremely popular now that the price of gas is ever-increasing. They're quite generous, too, considering many will give up to 5% back on all gasoline purchases. But the only way to get the cash back on gas purchases on most of these cards is if you make your purchase at a "real gas station". Supermarkets, wholesale clubs or other locations may not fit the card's guidelines and you won't earn as much cash back.
6. Annual fees will defeat the purpose of a rewards card. Usually. If you have to pay $30 a year for a rewards card, chances are you have to spend $3000 before you earn any rewards. However, if your rewards card offers double points or double frequent flyer miles, it might be worth the annual fee. It all depends how much you use your credit card.
7. Rewards have their limits. Make sure you understand what the maximum earnings for rewards are, particularly if you are someone who uses credit cards often. If your gas card gives you 5% cash back on gas

How To Quickly Increase Your Credit Score In One Day!

5 Quick Steps That Can Improve Your Credit Score By 18 Points In One Day!

1. Check with your bank
and see if they give you bill pay service. If so then start using it. Set up all your credit accounts so that all payments are made on time. I set mine for the avg minimum pmt on that particular card. If I could pay more I would, but at least I knewthat my payment was made on time.

2. At your earliest convenience, it is in your best interest to obtain a copy of your current credit report. This way, you will be able to see which of your accounts are actually listed on your credit report. You can get your credit report for free through several different websites online at least once per year.

3. Check for errors
- go through and double check all of your information so that you can be absolutely certain that there are no errors on your credit report. The reason behind these check are because errors can be quite devastating to your credit score.

4. If you do happen to find an error or two on your credit report, it should be resolved as soon as you possibly can. You can go about fixing the errors by contacting your lender to find out if they have the information correct. Then, you will be able to find contact information through your free credit report website so that you can get the errors deleted from your credit report.

5.Check your credit limits.
Are you over extended? Is more than 50% of your available credit limits in use? A quick way to increase your credit score is to bring down your debt ratio. I had a client that surprised me by calling her credit card company and requesting a credit line increase. Here orignal credit line was $4000 with $2500 in use. They increased her line to $7500 which put her at 33% of her available credit in use. The next month her credit score rose 18 points.

Remember that credit is a privilege, not a right. You should always do your best to take care of the credit that you are given and you will be sure to build a good credit report. Read More

Simply getting a reward credit card is not enough. Once your application has been approved, you need to do some steps to make the most out of it. Let's discuss some important points on how you can make your reward credit card work for you:

Make sure that the card does not ask for expensive annual fee. An annual fee is a mandatory fee that you need to pay in order to renew your membership for the card. If you have to pay a very expensive fee each year just to be part of the rewards program, weigh things very carefully if it's worth your money. If you can buy the rewards you earn for the whole year with the same amount of annual fee, then what's the point of getting a rewards card?

Top tips: Crack the credit card code

Latest News from Yahoo Finance

By Gerri Willis, CNN

Your credit card interest rate could shoot past 30 percent, even if you have good credit.

Credit card issuers are tightening the reins, and it's consumers who are feeling the pain. Here's what you can do about skyrocketing interest rates.

1: Get the low down

This isn't a new trend. Credit card companies can raise your rate at any time for any reason - even if the economy is sour.

But credit card issuers are jacking interest rates up to 30 percent or higher for people with good credit, simply because their payments were late by a day.

Borrowers With Good Credit May Benefit

Latest News from NYTimes.com

By JANE BIRNBAUM

The Federal Reserve's decision on Tuesday to cut interest rates by three-quarters of a percentage point should offer some comfort to consumers, with limits.

Economists and consumer advocates agree that the biggest beneficiaries will be consumers who have both good credit and secure jobs. Those borrowers will probably be able to refinance their home mortgages at lower rates and take advantage of less expensive car loans.

And some borrowers with adjustable-rate mortgages may also benefit because their monthly payments may not adjust upward as much.

You are right about the Roth. But you're better off with a 529 plan because there are better tax incentives. Should dad co-sign for credit card?

Latest Story from Yahoo Finance

Justin Harelik

Dear Bankruptcy Adviser,
My daughter and son-in-law went bankrupt and then my son-in-law was late paying some credit cards. I don't think he is too responsible and I would like to help my daughter get her credit back.

What I want to do for my daughter is to co-sign for a Visa credit card in her name and let her make the payments. I would limit it to a small amount, maybe $2,000, and I would want control as far as canceling the card if she fails to make payments and credit limits go. I would have the credit card company call me if she is behind so it would not damage my credit. Can I set up a card like this? And if she pays the credit card for say two years on time, do you think that would help her credit? I have a high credit score.

Security Vendors Battle More Pros

They know opponents' old moves. But now they must defeat the unseen.

It's a tall order that confronts software security makers: With most attacks now by pros seeking profit, better threats sneak in through new ways. The world has seen just the cusp of for-profit malicious code, says Oliver Friedrichs, a director in anti-virus software maker Symantec's (NasdaqGS:SYMC - News) security response unit. The trend toward it suggests a future fraught with rising personal data risks.
