Easy Step by Step Instructions for Cooking a Baked Potato

A microwaved baked potato is a great way to make a delicious meal really fast without having to wait for one to bake in the oven or boil in a pot. There's a lot you can do with your potato as well. You can melt cheese or butter on it, or add things like green onions and bacon. The best thing about microwaving a potato is that you have your meal ready in a fraction of the time it takes to cook it via other methods. Mmm...

Step 1: Wash Your Potatoes Well

Make sure to wash the potatoes and dry them before putting them in the microwave. A clean baked potato will always taste better. This step won't take you long at all. It's also a health issue - you don't know what kind of chemicals have come in contact with the surface of the potato.

Step 2: Poke Some Holes!

Take the time to poke some holes in your baked potato. This will allow the steam in the microwaved baked potato to properly escape the potato, and will aid in the cooking process by allowing the potato to cook faster so you can enjoy your potato sooner. These holes will also help the potato cool down faster once you've taken it out of the microwave. I recommend using a fork to poke the holes.

Step 3: Rub Some Oil On it

Rubbing oil on your potato will keep the skin from drying out and give your microwave baked potato a little bit more flavor. You can use any kind of cooking oil (olive, vegetable, peanut, etc.). Pick whichever one you like. This step isn't absolutely necessary, but I think it helps the flavor and enjoyment after you microwave the baked potato.

Step 4: Microwave Your Potato

Put your microwave baked potato on a plate. Then, cover it with a paper towel. Microwave the potato for five to eight minutes (this is for one potato - increase the time by 3-5 minutes if you're adding a few additional potatoes). Cooking time may very, but you'll want to cook it until your potato is cooked all the way through and is soft. You'll know the potato isn't done yet if you try to slice it with a knife and the knife doesn't cut through it easily. However, also be sure that you don't microwave the baked potato for too long, as you will overcook it and won't want to eat it.

Step 5: Let Your Potato Cool Down

After microwaving your baked potato, let it stand for a few minutes. You run the risk of burning yourself if you try to eat it too soon!

Step 6: Dress it Up and Enjoy!

Once the baked potato has cooled down enough, you can dress your microwaved baked potato however you'd like. Here are some suggestions for toppings:

- Butter
- Sour Cream
- Bacon Bits
- Green onions
- Grilled chicken
- Cheese

Enjoy!
