Think It's Impossible To Teach Your Cat Tricks? It's Easier Than You Think

Cats aren't known for being obedient like dogs are. When you get a dog, you expect to be able to train him. When you get a cat, it's more likely that you expect her to train you. That's usually the way it works out too. You feed her and clean her litter box practically at her direction. But when you tell her to come or sit or beg, the only indication that she hears you is her faint snort of feline laughter.

Cats are a bit more difficult to train than dogs, but it's not impossible to teach a cat tricks. Teaching your kitty a few cat tricks can be rewarding for both you and her. Learn how to teach cat tricks and with a little effort and patience, you can have her sitting and rolling over on command. There's no end to all the tricks to teach your cat.

There Are Two Methods To Teach Cats Tricks

There are a couple of ways to teach your cat tricks.

The first thing you're going to need to do before you can teach your cat anything is to get her to focus. That's where the first method comes in. Method #1 is called "Target Training". Basically, you use an object to capture your cat's attention. The best thing to use is a short stick with a little tuna oil on the end of it. If you wave that around in front of her, she'll take notice.

Once you've got your cat's attention, you need to make her understand that doing what you want her to do will earn her a reward. Method #2 is "Clicker Training". With clicker training, you use a small noise maker to make a clicking sound whenever your cat performs the action you want her to perform. You then give her a treat. Eventually, she'll learn to associate the desired action with the noise and the noise with the treat.

In most cases when you teach your cat tricks, you'll use a combination of both methods. You'll be amazed at how effective they are and how well your cat can learn.

How To Train Your Cat To Sit On Command

Most of the time when you tell a cat to do something-"Fluffy, sit!", she'll just stare at you like you're crazy. You might try pleading with her: "Fluffy, please sit." This will cause her to look away like she doesn't hear you. You could bribe her: "Sit and I'll give you a treat." Then she'll actually snub you by turning her back to you. Next you could demand her obedience: "Fluffy, sit now!" After all, you are the boss, right? At this point, she'll simply walk away from you, swishing her tail back and forth and smiling at how cute it is that you think you're in charge.

It doesn't have to be this way. You can have her eager to sit (or do any other trick) as soon as you tell her to. This is accomplished by using a combination of Target Training and Clicker Training as described above.

First, you hold the tuna scented stick above her head. Then slowly move the stick back towards her rear end just a little. In order to keep her eyes on the stick without loosing her balance, she'll naturally lower her butt to the floor. As she starts to lower her back end, say the word sit. As soon as she is actually sitting, click the clicker. After you use the clicker, give her a treat.

Repeat this process a few times and eventually your cat will learn to sit whenever you ask her to. Once you and your cat have mastered this trick, you can move on to others like stay or beg or high five.

The Best Treats For Teaching Your Cat

When training your cat, the treats you use should be small. If it takes her more than a couple of seconds to eat a treat, then it's too big. Try cutting it in half.

What Tricks Can Your Cat Do?

My cats said to tell you that they decline to do tricks. That being said, Wiley will lay down when I tell him "Good boy, lay down." He comes when he is called. And he is learning to accept a leash, although we started later in his life. Ghost says, go away, I'm napping.
