How To Unlock Your Nintendo Wii

The Wii console is a very powerful games system, but unlike its rivals the XBox 360 and the PS3 the Wii cannot play DVD movies.

This is not because it can't , it is due to a lock in its system placed there for commercial reasons by Nintendo.

There is a solution to this and that is to remove that lock. This will also allow you to play imported games, third party , downloaded or homebrew games, and allow the console to emulate (copy) other games systems, allowing it to play games designed for other consoles.

There are two paths you can take to unlock your Wii , the first is a hardware solution, where a mod chip is added to the Wii's circuit board to physically remove the lock.

The second is using a software patch to re write or adapt the machines firm ware or operating system, called a homebrew installer, this is as easy as loading a disc into the machine or connecting it to a computer, and letting the software patch run.

The first way of unlocking your Wii is using a hardware mod chip.

This method involves opening our Wii console, and adding the mod chip to the curcuit board.

I dont reccomend this method for several reasons.

1 It will invalidate your warranty

2 Unless you know what you are doing you can physically damage your console

3 You will no longer be able to update your console on the Nintendo channel

4 You may not be ableto play some online games

In short I do not recommend the hardware mod unlock route.

This is by far the easiest and most successful way to unlock your Wii for several reasons.

The software will rewrite or modify the system firmware or operating system. There are many available, and I would recommend researching any you are considering online to find the one you feel will be best for you. This patch is called a homebrew installer.

Whilst not being illegal, the manufacturers don't like them and sometimes will block the latest ones during a system update. The advantages of a firmware patch is that they are easy to install and easy to remove if they are found to be not suitable, most will let your Wii play DVD's imported games third party homebrew games and also emulate other games systems allowing you to play games for other systems on your Wii.
