How To Write Articles - Chose Your Topic First

Article writing is not for everybody. Some people find it difficult to string a sentence together when talking. The idea of writing an article scares them. Some advice on how to write articles might just help them.

Your first step towards writing an article would be to select a topic.

This does not necessarily mean that the right topic is one that you are extremely knowledgeable about. There is no harm in writing about a subject that would require you to research and learn new material for.

On the other hand if you are a reluctant writer and are concerned that your writing is of a poor standard, then find a topic that you are comfortable with. There will always be somebody who is interested no matter how remote the subject matter may be. Even if you have a passion for a remote mountain range in outer Mongolia, somebody is sure to have interest in that topic as well.

It also depends on why you are writing. Are you writing for your own blog, are you writing to get some practice in but not necessarily to be published, are you writing something for your young children to enjoy or are you wanting to consider a career as a serious journalist?

The answer to these questions will help you with your topic selection. If you are going to write for your children then you will want to chose a more fantasy oriented topic. If you are considering a career as a blogger then your subject matter for your blog will give you the clues as to what to write about.

If you decide to make a living with your blog then the content will need to focus on what subject you feel you might be able to make a living on. In this instance the choice of a relevant topic is even more important. Your earnings will depend on what you decide on.

Of course this does not mean that you should scare yourself right out of a suitable topic. There's no sense in being fearful. It could mean that you end up not even starting as you are worried you might make a mistake in your topic selection.

The advantage of writing for the internet is that it is so easy to test what is working and what is not. Just keep an eye on your analytic results and you will easily see what is working for you or not.

It is possible that none of the above works for you. You can't think of anything interesting, you have no idea what your blog should be about and as for a topic for children's stories where would you even start.

In this instance it might be an idea to brainstorm for half an hour. This is often done best with another person as it is easier to create some momentum with another person adding ideas. Alone it requires additional effort to overcome the stare at the page or create doodles stage.

Just write words onto a page, whatever comes into your head. It doesn't matter if they make sense or relate to one another. Don't hesitate or stop to think too much. Just go for it. Eventually you should have a full page of unconnected words.

Read them through carefully and pick any number of words that appeal to you. Cut those down again if too many and continue like this until you have a few concepts that really appeal to you. Start writing!
