How I Improved My Golf Swing

I've asked myself the question, "How can i improve my golf swing?", many times. I've also spent a great deal of time reading books on golf and searching for tips to improve my game.
It's a tedious task looking in various places for information and getting bad advice from friends.

Over the years I've collected tips and techniques from as many places and people as I could...

I've decided to place some of the better tips I've picked up over the years into one packed article.

Proper Golf Stance and Grip

The fun you get from golf is in direct ratio to the effort you don't put into it - Bob Allen

The law that must be followed for your tee-off is : Arms hang down but not out. This is the best position to truly make a good shot.

Many people say that your feet should be shoulder distance apart. Nonsense.
This is very general. Place them further apart or closer together, you must feel comfortable.

Women have wider hips than men and usually prefer a wider stance. By forcing your body into an uncomfortable position, you negatively affect your swing.

Do not stand too far away from the ball. Though it may seem that you will be able to get in a better swing, this is not the case. Stand as close to the ball as possible, while still having a decent amount of space to swing.

Golf Grip Technique

Relax? How can anybody relax and play golf? You have to grip the club don't you? - Ben Hogan

When it comes down to the choice of Baseball, Interlocking or Overlapping Grips, everyone has their own preference. By now I'm sure that every Tom, Dick, Harry and Sally has told you that the Interlocking Grip is the best. This is another false claim.

The Interlocking Grip does have great stability in the pressure points but this does not make it the best. Which ever one is most comfortable to you is the best grip available. Some people have bigger hands than others, or longer fingers, etc.

If your comfortable with a Baseball Grip then do not change it.

The Laws of Golf

Bets lengthen putts and shorten drives

Confidence evaporates in the presence of water

If you brought it, you won't need it; if you need it, you didn't bring it

A ball will always come to rest halfway down a slope unless there is sand or water at the bottom

Golf Driving Tips

Golf is a game in which you yell 'fore', shoot six and write down five - Paul Harvey

To improve your swing you need to learn to let your club do the work. Smashing the ball is not going to add that distance your looking for. Concentrate on your swing and on the center of the ball, not on hitting harder.

A tight grip does not equal a powerful swing.

Here's a tip:
Place some balls and start swinging. Loosen your grip a little after each swing and you will notice better direction and distance. Work at this until you find your correct balance. Remember that a very loose grip may cause slicing.

During a swing, you want to create a steeper swing path by keeping your grip very close to your body. This is a great way to add some distance to your shot.

If you swing back to far during the backswing, you will lose width and control. All the power required can be obtained from a little more than a three-quarter-length backswing.

Golf Chipping Tips

I'm in the woods so much I can tell you which plants are edible - Lee Trevino

Most golfer spend a significant amount of time trying to decide which wedge to use in each situation. The truth is that you can use pretty much any club in your bag. There are times when putting would be the best solution and yet it is overlooked.

If you really want a good game, you need to get the ball to land on the green as soon as possible. The longer the ball is in the air, the longer it has to make a mistake.

There should be no wrist breaking during a swing. If you are trying to lift the ball too much, you will probably not lift it at all. Let the club do what is was designed to do.

Improve your chipping by working on your distance control. Place a target outside and strike balls to land directly on it. This method can be used to improve your swing as well.

More Laws of Golf

The ball will always travel farthest when hit in the wrong direction

After the first putt sinks, the hole shrinks

The only sure way to get a hole-in-one is to be playing terrible golf all by yourself on a course you sneaked onto without paying on a day when you called in sick

Golf Putting Tips

Real golfers don't miss putts, they get robbed - Anonymous

The trick to putting is to attempt to keep the lower half of your body very still. Any movement can cause you send the ball along the wrong path or perhaps steal some of it's distance.

Many golfers set their stance before looking at ball to make their putt. They then end up shifting their weight onto either their heels or toes to compensate for the lack of or extra space. Always start your positioning from the top and work down. Eyesight directly above the ball, then adjust arms and lastly adjust your stance, ensuring that your weight is evenly distributed.

Fitness in Golf

The greatest liar in the world is the golfer who claims he plays the game for merely exercise - Tommy Bolt

I'll admit that I overlooked this part of golf training for a long time but I have realized that it is crucially important to stay fit. A good fitness program will increase your flexibility and core strength which is great for adding extra power to a swing. You do not need to become a body builder to play a good game but you should keep your muscles supple. The actual game of golf should not be called your weekly exercise routine.
