Tips on Preventing Identity Theft:
1. Always monitor your monthly account statements. Look for any unauthorized charges or changes in information that you didn't make. Report any fraudulent activity to the fraud department of the company the activity occurred.
2. Review your credit report periodically. You are entitled to one free credit report a year. Check for any fraudulent activity such as inquiries from company's you haven't contacted, accounts you didn't open, debts you can't explain, etc. Report such findings to one of the three major credit reporting bureaus and request that a fraud alert be placed on your report.
3. Never share your personal information. It is called personal information for a reason. No financial institution or respectable company you deal with will ever ask for such information. If you are contacted by someone wanting this information contact the company and verify why they need such personal information and how they plan to protect it.
4.Protect yourself online. Be aware of Internet phishing and Electronic Scams. (Refer to #3) Identity Thieves will use these as ways to steal your information. By the time you notice what has happened the damage will be done.
5. Protect your computer. Use a firewall or install a anti virus or spyware protection software. Identity thieves will use malware such as trojans, viruses, spyware, etc. to attach to emails and downloads so they can steal your personal information right from your computer before you ever notice it.
