Learning About The Golf Swing

Are you struggling with your golf swing? Tired of hitting the ball left and right? Well in this article I am going to show you How to swing a golf club.

Swinging a club takes a lot of practice and repetition. You have to know how to grip the club correctly, have good posture, a good backswing, a good downswing, contact the ball correctly, and have a good follow through.

It may sound like a lot to take in, but once you get the hang of the swing, you should be able to do all of the steps fluidly. Learning how to swing a golf club should not be difficult and with practice and dedication you will be swinging the club in no time at all.

First Thing First..... Posture/Grip

The posture of your golf swing is very important to learning how to swing a golf club. You want to start off by standing up straight. You want to spread your feet about shoulder width apart for your driver and longer irons.

For lower irons bring your feet closer together. Now tilt your body from the waist about 45 degrees. Let your hands hang freely in front of you.

Next slightly bend your knees slightly so that your lower body is not stiff. Also try and stick your butt out so you can twist your core more for more power.

Lastly your want to put your weight on the balls of your feet (thats the knuckles of your feet, or so I think they're knuckles) this will help a lot with your balance.

You want to start the grip with your left hand as shown in the picture. It should go from the top of the pinky to the joint of the index finger. Gripping to close to the palm will give you a weak grip.

The grip on the right hand should start from the pinky joint and move just left of the index finger joint. The club is going to move diagonally on your hand but not as much as the left hand did.

When your done gripping the club look at you thumb and hand. They are going to form a line. If you can't see this line, put your hand in front of you with your thumb stretched away from you hand. Now bring it towards your hand and fingers. Now you see it? OK.

When your gripping the club this line should point to the right side of the head. If it is pointing too much to the right you will have a strong grip and will hook or draw the ball. If you have it too much to the left you will have weak grip and slice or fade the ball.

Second..... The Backswing/Downswing

First of all, always remember to keep your eyes on the ball and don't move your head up or down. While swinging the club your head might move slightly from left to right and that is ok.

When starting your backswing move your shoulders and arms at the same time. While bringing the club back you should start to shift your weight to your right foot

Also about 1/4 of the way the club should be parallel to the ground and the toe pointing up. At this point you should start to rotate your hips with your shoulders and arms.

You do not want to bend your left arm and your right arm should bend 90 degrees (it's like your left arm and right arm make a triangle). At the top of your backswing the club should be parallel again but the toe pointing down now.

The beginning of the downswing should start with a slight shift of weight to the left foot. Now start to uncoil your body like a spring. Make sure that you keep your arms in front of your shoulders and your shoulders and waist aligned.

When bringing the club down keep your hands in front of the club, like if your hands are faster than the club (also known as lagging).

Also a thing to remember is never lose the 45 degree angle (in your posture) you started with. The swing is coming together, your learning how to swing a golf club. Keep up the good work.

Finally..... The Contact/Follow Through

As with the backswing and downswing you want to keep your head still and eyes on the ball. During the contact or impact your right arm should have straightened up and your shoulders, arms, and hips in front of you and facing towards the ball.

The club should also be all squared up to the ball and target. By square, i mean, you want the club at the original position you had it.

During the follow through keep your head down even after you have hit the ball. About 1/4 of the way of your follow through the club should be parallel to the ground and the toe of the club pointing up. To learn how to swing a golf club, you need to follow these steps in order.

Fundamentals Are Key

Like every sport you play, you have to learn the fundamentals. I have just given you tips on how to swing a golf club, use them and start to play and enjoy, in my opinion, the best sport ever.

I suggest you go to the driving range and practice these steps and work on your tempo. Do this by hitting the ball smoothly. Take a full swing but only use about 50% of your power. That's a good tempo exercise. Ok guys and gals, go out there and start swinging and when you've learned, teach someone else how to swing a golf club.
