The Art of Hiring a Contractor

What to look for when hiring a home improvement contractor.

How to tell if a contractor is right for your project

The Art of Hiring a Contractor

I will be submitting articles on hiring contractors to problem solving typical to not so typical home repairs and improvements homeowners typically come across. If you have questions please feel free to submit to this article and I will try to answer your questions. However, for today I would like to discuss Home improvement contractors. In a prior life, I was a home improvement contractor for a number of years and have experienced situations from the other side as a contractor. There are things that a homeowner can look for when hiring a contractor. These things are obvious. First, notice punctuality, Secondly, look at the vehicle that the contractor arrives in. Is it in disrepair? Think about it a contractor that cares about his business would invest in a vehicle that shows he is serious about business. Now I am not saying he has to show up in a 50,000.00-dollar vehicle. It should be presentable. Next, does he shake your hand when introducing himself? Ask questions, look for tell tale signs. References, a good contractor has a following. Is he licensed? Is he insured? Taking time to notice these things should help in your decision in hiring a home improvement contractor. Only you the homeowner can avoid hiring a wannabe contractor. NEXT: Tales from the Home improvement contractors point of view.

The Art of Starting a Major Renovation

Today is the big day! You are going to start that home improvement project that you have been dreaming about. Open the yellow pages and find a home improvement contractor and presto! Not so fast -

So.. You have an idea about what you would like to accomplish with your home improvement renovation. You went over it and now the timing is right for you to start and complete in 2 months. Does that sound good? Well hold on there. You need plans, yes plans. So do not call that contractor just yet.

You see the building inspector is also interested in you home improvement project from a building up to code standards point of view. Well, this now involves an architect. I hope you thought of that and figured it into your time allotted for completion. This is the most common mistake a homeowner makes. You see Architects are very busy even more so than a home improvement contractor. Therefore, a home improvement contractor is useless until you can furnish him with plans. In addition, any contractor that says he can build without them is going to make both of your lives very interesting.

Now you must choose an architect. This also is a tricky task. Because they are so busy, you can wait for drawings for months. In addition, you need to scrutinize architects just as you would a builder. Because unbelievably there are some lets just say some architects out there that will not have your deadline in mind.

What have you learned? You need to start the process in the winter so that you can begin the project in the spring. Taking on a major home improvement renovation is a time consuming and stressful decision. You can avoid most of this stress by starting early enough so as not to rush. Then you can save all of your stress for when you are ready to choose cabinets and tile. Moreover, move on to the things that make your home improvement project worthwhile.

The Art of Increasing Your Page Rank

This is one persons take on increasing page rank. It is by far a tried and true method but hey, it cannot hurt. Who knows it might actually work!

After perusing page after page and article after article of "How To" increase page rank until I was almost comatose. I have decided to throw my hat into the proverbial ring and shed some light on the way I would go about increasing page rank.

Now if you decide to use my ideas please note that it is imperative that you keep timing in mind. You know the old saying." Out of sight out of mind" well I am sure that applies here. Also, remember these are ideas and I would like some sort of credit if all goes well and complete absolution if it fails hideously.

As a web designer once told me, "You better pay up or the page you are looking at now will no longer be there". (What a joker he was). Anyway, below you will find a few tips that I will be using and as I said before they are not for the weak.

First get in touch with Google and tell them that you Yahoo meant absolutely nothing to you. It was a fling and you swear your undying love only to Google. (Alternatively, you can use "King" who knows it cannot hurt).

Secondly, send flowers to Google I would say everyday about a month before the update religiously. (Do not forget to have a resource box where you can submit your domain address) Remember to check your spelling.

Third, offer to do their laundry I am sure there are single people working there that would appreciate this. In addition, if that does not work suggest donating one of your organs. (Their choice of course) In addition, while you are at it suggest to them they contact DMOZ and let them know about your generosity. (Just in case they have a few hundred laundry loads, they need to have picked up. (I am here for ya)

Lastly, when the page rank update takes place and if it does not meet your approval. Deny it and let them know it was a mistake you would like to have changed please to something like a 7 or 8 whichever is good for them. In the end if all of these tactics prove to be worthless then I suppose I will be back reading forums and linking to sites and writing articles until I am comatose.
