What steps do I take to Report my Identity Theft?
Once you have realized your a Victim of Identity Theft you should contact one of the three major credit reporting bureaus to place a fraud alert on your report.
Doing so as soon as you realize the theft of your identity will help minimize the damage.
Contact the fraud department of the companys you think the fraudulent activity occurred. Ask them to dispute the charges if they have already reported it to the credit bureau. Follow up any calls in writing and mail the letters certified mail return receipt requested. This way you will have a document showing what the company received and when.
File a report with the local police. You may need a copy of the report to show company's proof that a crime was committed. They may also be able to provide you with more tips and resources.
File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can obtain a Identity Theft Complaint Form from online or by calling their tollfree hotline at: 1-877-ID-THEFT, (438-4338).
By reporting your Identity Theft to the FTC you can help provide information to help track down and stop these thieves.
