Instructions on How To Make A Headboard

Just follow these simple instructions to make your headboard

Just follow these simple instructions to make your headboard for your bed.
  1. Measure your bed that you are making the headboard for
Cut out the desired shape of your headboard out of the plywood. There are many shapes you can design, it really just depends on how you want your headboard to look.

Remember though, making curved and decorative headboards can be tricky, if you go for a simple linear one to start with then the quality you will achieve will be far better.
  2. Cut out the foam to go on your headboard and use an adhesive to glue it in place. I usually lay the foam on top of the headboard and use a carving knife to shear the excess material away till I achieve the shape I want. This bit can be quite time consuming but well worth doing well to get that solid look and feel at the end result.
  3. Cover the headboard with the padding or wadding and again glue in place. This is fairly simple, what you want to aim to do is give an EVEN covering of wadding so the headboard is proportionally stuffed.
  4. Stretch the fabric over the headboard making sure it is tight and tac/glue/nail in to position on the back.
Depending on how much love you give it, will directly determine the end result. Spend time, have patience and measure twice cut once.

The best tip for covering your headboard will be to make sure you stretch the material as tight as possible. This not only means the headboard will look better over time, but it also helps keep the firmness and shape of the wadding.

For a cheap simple base make a plywood headboard. ITs strong, durable and easy to shape.

When covering the headboard make sure your fabric match's the design of the bedroom.

Always think about how you are going to attach the headboard to a wall before you make any cuts. Ideally the headboard will be the same width of the bed base, however depending on the style of the bed you may need to allow extra width for easier fitting.

Secure the headboard properly, the last thing you want is your headboard falling on your head during the night.

I find rectangular headboards to be the most rewarding shape to make. They can generally be placed in all sorts of themed rooms and are by far the easily type of headboard to make.

If you can sew, make a tight fitting cover, and you can change the design anytime.

Always place the plywood on the ground and mark out the headboard shape. Measure Twice, Cut Once and then be sure to sand the edges down to get a soft edge and remove all splinters that could damage the headboard fabric.

Once you have made the headboard, why not make a matching foot board?
