Virtual Tour of the Hoysala Temple in Halebid, Karnataka
Ranked #4,392 in Travel & Places, #130,692 overall
The Temple At Halebid
The temple at Halebid, or Halebeedu as it is called locally, is almost identical to that in Belur. The essential difference stems from the fact that the temple at Belur is a Vishnu/Krishna temple. This one is dedicated to Shiva.
The temple is actually a complex of two temples that is interconnected. This was built by the minister in honour of the King and the Queen; hence the two temples - one slight bigger than the others.
Halebid is an unfinished temple. It was ransacked by Islamic invaders before it could be completed. Though kind of sad, the unfinished temple actually is great from archeological point of view, as it is possible to figure out the process of temple building in medieval India.
Where exactly is Halebid?
Halebid is located a short distance from the Hassan district of Karnataka, about 250 km from Bangalore.
It was built beside a large artificial lake known as Dvarasamudra.
The Garbha Gruha

Garbha=womb; Gruha (or Griha) = house. In English, the Sanctum Santorum. The presiding deity, Shiva, is worshiped primarily in phallic form (Shiva Linga). At the entrace of the grarbhagruha are the two Dwarapalas (Dwara = door; Palas = guards).
Dwarapala - Left of Garbhagruha (when you face it)

The Dwarapala on the left. See those (small black) skulls on the head gear. They are 3-D and hollow. To demonstrate this the guide pushes a twig through the eyes of the skull and end of the twig comes out of the mouth.
Krishna lifting Govardhan Mountain

This is Krishna lifting the Govardhan mountain to save the villagers of the Brindavan village from the anger of Indra the God of rain and thunder. The people of Brindavan used to worship Indra. Krishna persuaded them to worship the mountain instead. Indra was naturally extremely angry and send torrential rain own on the villagers. Krishna then lifted the mountain on his little finger and all the villagers and other animals (who were equally troubled by the rain) took shelter. Finally, Indra gives up.
Dancing Shiva

This is Shiva dancing away to glory. He is more immediately recognizable here. Compare this to the dancing Shiva in Belur (in my other lens)
The Hindu Trinity

The Hindu Trinity consists of the Creator (Brahma), the Preserver (Vishnu), and the Destroyer (Shiva). Generally, they are placed in the order: On your left, Brahma, in the middle, Vishnu and on your right, Shiva. However, since this s a Shiva temple, the order is slightly modified: Shiva is in the centre and Vishnu is on your right.

- Very happy to see the 'lens' on Halebid. I and my husband visited the temple as well as Belur about 20 years ago and were simply struck by their beauty. These temples should be among the wonders of the world- they are so exquisite. Somehow, they have not got the prominence they deserve.
