Have you Been Across any of these Bridges?

From the lens Bridges of the Hudson Valley.

If you've visited the Hudson Valley you must have seen at least some of these bridges. Were you impressed?

Hi, I've been over the Tappan Zee Bridge many times going to my sister's house in Pennsylvania. It's long. I've been over the Bear Mountain Bridge, too. It's high. I don't recognize some of the others. Love the lens.

Yes, all that are cross able.I worked in sales when I lived in NY and my territory was unlimited. I crossed the Tappan Zee bridge every day or the George Washington bridge to get to Henry Hudson or the Bronx and NYC. Your
lens brings back memories. Great lens.

My memories of crossing the Bear Mountain Bridge while on vacation in the Catskills takes me back to the early 30's. Our '33 DeSoto took us comfortably from Stamford, over the bridge and up 9W to our rental cabin each year for two wonderful weeks. Beautiful trip all the way, especially the bridge!
  • kab Mar 21, 2012 @ 12:10 pm | delete
I've been across all but Bear Mountain, I believe. A little farther north across the Hudson, between Albany and Rensselaer, is the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Angelina Jolie films portions of her movie Salt on this bridge jumping from level to level.

I cannot believe that we have been living so close to each other and now that I find that out I am leaving for Minnesota! I love the Hudson area. It is so beautiful. I feel blessed that I have been fortunate to see it and you have done such a good job on this lens about the bridges here. *Squid Angel Blessed* and added to My Squid Angel Blessings 2012 in the "Travel & Places ยป United States" neighborhood.

For a while I worked in an office near the Tappan Zee bridge, and even though NYC is 45-60 mins away, I can confirm that the NYC skyline is very visible on clear days. Amazing view...

These are really lovely, I adore the photos.

Great lens; I love that you've given history on each of the bridges and the photos are lovely. Nice job. And yes, I've been over several of these bridges quite often (especially the Rip Van Winkle, since it's about 15 minutes from my house)
  • QuiltFinger Mar 20, 2012 @ 9:56 am | delete
Marvelous lens! I used to live In the Husdon Valley and my grandparent's lived a few miles the the Rip van Winkle Bridge for more than half a century. One time, my dad and I were driving across the bridge, and he mentioned the story of Rip van Winkle who fell asleep for 20 years. As a logical five year old, I plugged in the blanks and said with great seriousness, "and then he turned into a bridge!" Thanks for the memories.

Very nice photos of the bridges of Hudson Valley. I never been there before, but from the pictures, I can tell that they are a great and beautiful architecture.

I love love love this lens! I grew up right outside of Hudson, NY. I have been to all of these bridges. It was always magical as a child when you crossed the Rip Van Winkle bridge. You got to see Rip Van Winkle sleeping in the mountain with the "Witches Castle" (that's what we thought it was, no matter how many times our parents told us what it really was lol) when you were leaving Catskill. Now I'm homesick, what a great reason to go visit my family hehe. Thanks!

a great lens to include on the featured ons on my Yonkers, NY lens
    great work.

I might have over looked it but did you know they are building another bridge? (not sure what's going to happen to the Tappan Zee after its built though)
  • jptanabe Mar 19, 2012 @ 5:38 pm | delete
Yes, it appears they will actually start building a new Tappan Zee Bridge that is "attractively designed and strong enough to allow bus and rail services" in the foreseeable future. Once they start submitting designs I'll be adding them!
  • sousababy Mar 19, 2012 @ 5:29 pm | delete
I have not been across these bridges (yet), I live in Canada. However my father was an engineer and designed dams (around the Great Lakes region) working for the Ministry of Natural Resources as Deputy Minister (once upon a time). I was fascinated (and still am) by how much structural detail, reinforcement and allowances must be made for bridges to sway, contract and expand. Congrats on having HQ feature this excellent lens today . . keep 'em coming.

A beautiful part of the country and yes I have been across some of those bridges!

I am always impressed with just about anything from my home state. It's a shame that so many of them are in trouble due to decay. I'm writing a lens on repair of the nation's infrastructure and you lens today certainly fits in as an example of some of the problems. See you around the galaxy...

The Hudson is my favorite part of New York state. I've been across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, Tappan Zee, and the Bear Mountain Bridge. They all have incredible views. The roads that wind up around the mountains near Bear Mountain have some tremendous views from the top. Excellent work!

You know I haven't been across any of those bridges YET. I've enjoyed living in Jacksonville and crossing all the bridges here. What amazing feats of building!
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 16, 2010 @ 7:53 pm | delete
Such a romantic lens about bridges! I have always just taken them for granted, but I believe I will always see them differently now. I laughed at the mention of ferries. I remember being terrorized by ferries when I was very little. I much prefer bridges. The photos are beautiful!
  • jptanabe Jul 19, 2010 @ 9:46 am | delete
That's funny that you didn't like the ferries! When I was little there was a ferry from my hometown across the river to where we always went for summer vacations - so I loved the ferry. Then they built a bridge, and it was much less exciting (and much quicker!) to cross the river.
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Mar 31, 2010 @ 7:00 pm | delete
Bridges are beautiful and I love to look at them, but I hate driving over them. I don't know why. I don't mind riding but driving... I'll do anything to avoid it.
    Great pictures.
