I would like to visit. I am sad that noone saved the Wyndcliffe Mansion! I cant understand why they wouldnt save such a unigue building. Such a shame!

There is so much to see and do in this country that I'll have to add a couple more lifetimes just to get to them all. What a lot of history in this area. Great pictures and info.

I definitely will now ... I'm sorry to say that we've lived here in the Hudson Valley 8 years now and haven't done as much local sightseeing as we'd like.
  • jptanabe Mar 20, 2012 @ 10:50 am | delete
I know how it goes - local sightseeing is something we've done mostly with out of town guests!
  • SarahGh Mar 20, 2012 @ 7:40 am | delete
Such an interesting lens, I have always been a great fan of history :) Thanks!

I've never been to the area but you've definitely convinced me that I need to add it to my list of must-see places!

    Simply stunning!
  • Edutopia Feb 14, 2012 @ 1:38 pm | delete
All of these except Eleanor Roosevelt's and Morse's houses are straight up American castles. And on the subject of Samuel Morse's house, I can't get over how modern the aesthetic is on such an old house. I'd love to go visit it.

  • jimmyworldstar Dec 3, 2011 @ 4:23 pm | delete
A lot of these mansions look beautiful and it's great that they've all been pretty well maintained. In away it's like going back in time and getting a glimpse into the lives of their previous owners. I've only been to NYC and Buffalo but I'd love to just take a day trip and explore.

I have been to the Vanderbilt mansion in Hyde Park. Also, Sunnyside -- that's a bus trip all New York City school kids take. Nice lens

Locust Grove and Olana both have something special that draws me to them and of course all of them have an air of wonder. I can't even imagine what it would cost to duplicate any of them today but good craftsmanship has paid off as they have stood the test of time.

The old mansions are so great to see. They are actually like castles. It's fun to imagine that life.

I've been here before (your lens, I mean, but I've also been to the Hudson Valley ... just not to any of the mansions) but wanted to stop back to leave a blessing on my "Back to School Bus Tour."

I haven't actually visited any of these mansions, but seeing photos of the Hudson River Valley brings back memories, as I've been there more than once. I walked across a bridge over the Hudson River when I hiked the Appalachian Trail and have driven through the area several times. As much as I enjoy it out here in the southwest, I do miss the east.

Very interesting and beautiful tour of historic mansions....I would love to visit in person, and hope I can one day. Thanks for the glimpse today.

No, but I'd sure like to. I'm more interested in roaming the gardens than the interiors, so I'd better come when the weather is good and the views are clear.
  • Jewelsofawe Jan 7, 2011 @ 8:15 pm | delete
It would be so cool to have such a beautiful home as what you see in mansions.

What a wonderful lens. Such a period in time doesn't last long. The magnificent buildings in the U.K. are all part of some Trust or another. At least they are being preserved. There is a story of King Edward VIII of England, his cousins the Kaiser and the Tsar walking too far in the English countryside. They stopped a man riding by in a carriage an asked for a lift back, which he gave them. The King introduced himself and the others as "I am Edward, King of England, these gentlemen are, Wilhelm, Kaiser of German, and Nicholas, Czar of all the Russias. And you my good man...?"

    "Me I'm bloody Shakespeare."
  • AndyPo Oct 27, 2010 @ 5:06 am | delete
Excellent lens, as always. Sounds like somewhere I should visit next time I am in America. The views and the mansions look a bit like where I live: Richmond upon Thames in west London, where there are several mansions and palaces along the Thames: Sion House, Ham House (visible from my lounge), Marble Hill, York House...
  • jptanabe Oct 27, 2010 @ 8:56 am | delete
Good point, Andy. Those who built mansions here certainly imported European, and probably English, aesthetics and culture, not always quite successfully! Interesting to compare the mansions of the Thames with those of the Hudson though.

This is a wonderful tour of the Hudson Valley. I've never visited any of these mansions but I hope to one day (especially Val Kill and Sunnyside). I thoroughly enjoyed spending time on this delightful lens. Blessed and marked for a return visit.

No, I have not, but vicariously though your beautiful lens. My dream is to someday live next or near the ocean so the sound of the surf will lull me to sleep.

Wow, I had NO idea there were so many mansions in NY. I've only recently been to the Vanderbilt in NC, and loved it. This is an excellent lens and makes the viewer ready to head east. Faved, rolled, and starred. :-) Thanks for stopping by my Lens today!

Hi JP. I've never actually visited any of these mansions of the Hudson Valley, but - wow - reading the names of the NY families and their beautiful homes was like a history lesson back to school days. I grew up in New York State (Rochester, Finger Lakes Region) and have driven along the Hudson River, whose name is SO familiar to me. And the NAMES - any NY State child (of MY day, anyway) knows who the Rockefellers, Roosevelts & Vanderbilts were. And Lyndhurst, Sunnyside, Kykuit and Hyde Park are names I seem to have known all my life! What a lot of memories they bring back! I thoroughly enjoyed my 'tour' of these Hudson Valley Mansions with you and am delighted to be able to leave a ~~SquidAngel Blessing~~

Have toured Biltmore House in Asheville three times, so I know I would love to tour these Hudson Valley mansions as well. It's quite fascinating to see how others choose live.
  • BevsPaper Aug 18, 2010 @ 6:02 am | delete
My goodness these mansions of the Hudson Valley are really something. Oddly, I was struck more by the unobtrusive home of Eleanor Roosevelt.
  • oztoo Aug 5, 2010 @ 6:39 pm | delete
Fabulous homes and a wealth of history in the Hudson Valley. I've always loved visiting places like this. Great informative lens.
  • Julia Aug 5, 2010 @ 7:59 am | delete
I have been to Olana about 10 times, it's always beautiful. Clermont, Montgomery Place, Vanderbuilt, Springwood, and Hyde Park are all best in Spring/ Summer. I visited Lyndhurst in the fall and it was too cold to tour the grounds really. All of the houses are gorgeous and I've never had a bad tour at any of them.
  • vallain Jul 29, 2010 @ 7:21 pm | delete
Sure would make a great trip to travel along the Hudson to see these mansions.
  • Light-in-me Jul 21, 2010 @ 6:38 pm | delete

Amazing stuff! I think for some reason that I actually visited Clermont many years ago! The Rockefeller Family Home, Kykuit ... how did it get that name of Kykuit?

Lovely presentation. I will have to put the Hudson Valley on my travel list. The mansions in this area are quite unique and full of history. Thanks for the introduction. :)

Amazing! Such lavish and beautiful homes with breathtaking views. I didn't realize they were all open for public tours. Just might have to make a little sojourn to your Hudson Valley. It seems a bit ridiculous that I have seen mansions and castles in the UK but not in the US.
  • WordCustard Dec 10, 2009 @ 9:31 am | delete
Thank you for an introduction to this region - it really does look beautiful and Lyndhurst looks amazing. Val-Kill has a strange name but is so pretty and actually looks quite cosy for a mansion.
