5 important items you will need for a successful hunt

1. Get yourself outfitted with some good quality camo. Layering works well as you never know what the weather is going to do. So be prepared!

2. Scent blocking agents are very helpful and there are numerous types to choose from. From body sprays to laundry soap and everything in between. One of my absolute favorites is Gum-o-flage.

3. Be sure you have the proper firearm and ammunition for the game you are seeking. You could be in an awful mess if you took a 22 to shoot a bear.

4. When hunting it is important to bring along a knife to field dress your game. Something like the Ridge Runner Deluxe Game Cleaning Kit is a great all around kit for cleaning wild game.

5. The utmost important part to a successful hunt is to have the proper licenses and tags to the game you are after. Be sure to purchase all proper licenses before going on a hunt.

Tips For Your First Trip Out

  • Start Early
    • Hunting seasons are limited by certian dates and times. Guns can not be fired before sunrise or after sunset for the safety of all concerned. However you should be prepared to hunt early. Get out there and settle in before the sun comes up to lessen the possiblity of being noticed. This also allows you to be prepared when the first specimens begin to move around. Experienced hunters will tell you that the best time to bag game is at sunrise and sunset.

  • Avoid Scents
    • Just as important as covering your scent you should also never wear perfume, cologne, aftershave or strongly scented aftershave. Human smells spook animals easily, and one of the best hunting tips to keep in mind is to let the wilderness cover your smell. This is one of the few times in life showering later rather than earlier is better.

  • Silence
    • You are out there to have funwith friends and family but wild game tend to have a very keen sense of hearing and anything louder then a whisper may be heard. Even the smallest sound as you are lining up for a shot can scare an animal.

Read, read, read. There are bunches of great hunting magazines out there today. Pick up a couple on the game you want to hunt next time you're in the grocery store. Read them and then reread them. They are very informative and are written by experts in the industry. My second big tip is to just get out there. Don't wait for the right day or time. Just get out there, even if only for a hike. Watch the animals, look for sign, experience the woods from a hunters perspective.
