PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR A HURRICANE

We have just seen the devastation of a hurricane and tropical storm; Irene left unexpected damage in an area that doesn't usually see this type of disaster. Imagine for a moment, the affects on pets.

As a responsible dog owner, you know that your furry friend is totally dependent on you. Living in an area prone to hurricanes, or any other major weather event, you are familiar with the importance of preparation for potential disaster. Your dog is a family member and must be included as part of the hurricane preparation. Be sure you make a list of the necessities your dog requires during a hurricane.

Hurricane Katrina resulted in the loss of over 600,000 animals. The size, strength and flooding of this hurricane was the primary cause of loss. But too many times irresponsible humans play a role in the loss of pets. Your dog is relying on you for their well being and safety during a hurricane or similar weather event. Don't let them down!

Hurricane season is just around the corner. Make your plan now for your pets and start collecting the necessities you might need.

KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE DURING THE HURRICANE

Your dog needs many of the same items the rest of the family may need for safety during a hurricane. To keep your dog safe during a hurricane, be sure you have a first aid kit for pets. This is an item that pet owners should always have but during a hurricane, it is absolutely essential. Under normal conditions, you can get your dog to the vet or go to a pet supply store for first aid items. Hurricanes can result in the loss of power for days (sometimes weeks) and most businesses are closed.

You, your dog and other family members are all subject to injury during a hurricane. There is also the possibility that your dog will become sick. If your dog takes any medication on a regular basis, be sure you have enough on hand for several days. Also, be sure your dog's medical records are available. The first aid kit, any medications and the medical records should be kept in a water proof container. You may need these items if evacuation becomes required. If you need to evacuate, you also need a collar with an ID tag, leash and a pet carrier. The ID should include your dog's information as well as your name, a phone number and address for contact. Be sure you have a recent photo of your dog in case you are separated from your pet. Unfortunately, most shelters will not accept pets. If you know your area is in the evacuation corridor, it is important that you take these precautions.

If you are in the evacuation corridor, another important step is a little research. Before hurricane season, find out which hotels located along your evacuation route will accept your dog. Remember, not all hotels are pet friendly. Keep the hotel name, address and phone number with your dog's survival kit. The more you prepare in advance, the less stress you'll face should a real disaster occur. This is time and money well spent.

As you prepare for hurricane season, make a list of the supplies your dog needs. For example, you need a food supply for several days, lots of water, food and water dishes, a battery operated can opener, dog bed, and a few favorite toys. It is recommended that you have a two week supply of dry food. If doggie insists on wet food, buy single serving cans. When the power is off, you won't have refrigeration for unused food. You should have a two week supply of water in tightly closed containers.
