Learn hydroponics for beginner
Hydroponics is a cultivation method that doesn't use soil but water or the other porous substances as a growth medium. It has a nutrient control that contents of essential component as the plant necessity.
Hydroponics was introduced for the first time by W.A. Setchell from the University of California. It has a relationship to the previous successful experiment "the development of cultivation method using water as the growth place" by W.F. Gericke from the same university.
Based on the growth medium, hydroponics consists of 3 categories. They are :
Water culture is the oldest technique found by Aztec nation since 15th century ago. Plants are growth in the specific medium that nutrient solution is available in the bottom of medium.
Aggregate culture. The growth medium component, such as: gravel, sand, charcoal, rice husk etc, must be sterilized before used as the growth medium. As a nutrient supply, we can irrigate nutrient solution to the growth medium.
Nutrient Film Technique. Plants are cared in the long-narrow ditch made by thin stainless metal plate. In here, plant will be irrigated a nutrient solution for it necessities.
Many important factors for hydroponics growth
- Nutrient substances
Nutrient gift regularly is important to hydroponics gardening because a growth medium only has a function as a plant support and "facilitator" to continue excessive solution and water when plants were watered.
The available nutrient must have pH value among 5.5 - 7.5, which the best is 6.5. Macro nutrients, such as: Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, and Sulfur, are needed by plant in the large amount. Besides that, it must has relatively high concentration.
Micro nutrients, such as: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Cu, Chloride, etc, are needed by plant only in the low amount and concentration. A plant necessity, which has different amount each other, depends on the growth level and kind of plant.
Nutrient solution is made by fertilizer nitrates diluted into the fresh water. Actually, many kinds of nitrates can be used as the nutrient solution. - Hydroponics growth medium
Kind of growth medium will influence the growth and development of plant. A growth medium must be able to provide water, nutrient, and oxygen, also not contents of toxic substances.
Materials used to hydroponics growth medium are: sand, gravel, husk charcoal, sponge, etc. It will influence the medium environment quality. Actually, temperature level, aeration, and the medium humidity level, has different amount and concentration for the plant growth. It depends on the material that will be used. - Oxygen
The most important thing in the hydroponics gardening is oxygen. Low amount of oxygen causes cell membrane reduction that air and nutrient becomes harder to penetrate into the cell. When happened, plant will become water insufficient condition. That's why plants become wither in the flood soil condition.
The oxygen level inside the medium pores also influence the root growth. To supply oxygen to the plant can be done many ways, such as: give air bubble in the solution (water culture), change nutrient solution, and make any ventilation holes in the growth place (aggregate culture). - Water
The water quality suitable to hydroponics must have humidity level not more than 2500 ppm or EC score less than 6.0 mmhos/cm. Also, water must not content of heavy metal in the large amount because it can poison the plant.
Many advantages of hydroponics are : much of plant production per unit, grow faster, water and fertilizer usage is more effective and efficient, less worker, work environment is cleaner, more accurate to control pH, water, and nutrient, able to decrease disease problem, also we can cultivate plant in the unsuitable areas.

Hydroponics cultivation step
A. Growth medium
The best growth medium has neutral pH level or among 5.5 - 6.5. Besides that, it must has porous and able to keep humidity.
A. Growth medium to nursery or seedling plant
To seedling plant can be used a growth medium, such as: soften sand, husk charcoal or rock wool. Soften sand is frequently used because easy to attain and low on cost. Unfortunately, it cannot keep the water perfectly, and the nutrition is not available. A growth medium usually used to hydroponics is a mixture of husk charcoal and sawdust, or coconut fiber.
Medium to mature plant
Actually, medium to mature plant is almost similar to the seedling growth medium. Such as: raw sand, husk charcoal, rock wool, etc. Husk charcoal is the ideal growth medium. It has many benefits, such as: clean, sterile, free from dirty and pests. For example: worm, louse and the other organisms that able to life in the sand.
You can make a growth medium done by yourself or purchase at the farm shop. Husk charcoal is a light component, but easy to damage. Well, it's recommended to use only for twice times.

B. Seed
The plant commodity choice must be surely considered involving it price and market. For example: An exclusive vegetable that has the highest resale value, such as: Recento tomato, Japan cucumber, melon, paprika, salad, etc.
C. Complete your equipment
- Seedling container. You can use any materials, such as: plastic pot, small poly bag, plastic tank, seedling plate, or wood box. A container to the mature plant growth is poly bag (size: 30 - 40 cm) with enough holes used to irrigate excessive water when watered.
- Wet tissue or newsprint used to keep the plant humidity.
- Sand sieve used to sieve the seedling medium.
- Hand sprayer used to spray the plant.
- To mix the growth medium can be used a scooper.
- Pincers used to take and put a seed into the container.
- Poly bag, which has 5 kg size, used to replant mature plant.
- Jute yarn used to bind a plant.
- Bucket used as a watering equipment.
