I've driven from Maine to Miami several times and it's a great road trip.

I don't know what it is about Boston but I've always wanted to visit it, maybe I'll take the highway to it!

I'd love to travel up and down each coast and across also. There's so much individual charm to the cities.

Washington DC is a pretty cool stop, lots to see and explore

Very cool idea for a lens! We took I-95 down to Baltimore for a long weekend a short time ago, and I ended up writing three lenses about the trip on Geppi's Entertainment Museum, Visiting Fort McHenry and the Moon Baltimore tourism guide. Lots of fun!

Hi, thanks for this great lens!
I'm planning a roadtrip with my friends this summer. It'd be four of us, all drivers, between 24 and 28 years of age, from Europe (Italy). We'll have exactly two weeks (from the 9th to the 23rd of August). I've visited the US many times, and lived in Northern Cali for a while, but have never been to the east coast (with the obvious exception of New York) so I can really use some expert advice.
What I'm thinking is to fly into Boston, rent a car, see a bit of New England, then drive all the way down to Miami, Key West and back up through Naples and Tampa to fly out of Orlando. Do you think this is doable? I mean, of course the driving part per se is feasible, but will we have enough time to see -not everything, ok- but all the most important, not-to-be-missed things? (we would like to skip out only on New York as we've all been there already and think it would deserve at least 4 days on its own which we don't have this time)
Thanks a lot for your opinion and any suggestions you may have!

Great info! I'm trying to plan a three week roadtrip and would love to do (part of )this route. As of right now the still very vague plan is to drive from Niagara Falls to Miami, then catch a flight to California and see LA, Las Vegas, San Fran, Yosemite & Grand Canyon (not in that order). I am a little worried that this might be way too much for three weeks though. Do you think it's doable? I'm from Europe, and although I lived in the States before, I've never done a long road trip like this, so it's hard to estimate the time needed.
  • kiwisoutback Feb 17, 2011 @ 8:56 pm | delete
I think it is doable, but it will be a very fast paced trip. I drove across country and back in 3 1/2 weeks, doing the northern, southern route, east, and west coast. I think you could do the East Coast segment you mentioned in about a week (maybe less if you really rushed it).

The second leg will take longer since that's a roundabout trip, and there aren't direct routes that connect those destinations - they're all small highways (really just two lane roads). If I had to guess, this portion might take around 2 weeks - putting you just at 3 weeks. It'll be tough, but doable! Good luck with your trip - let us know how you make out.

Yikes - sounds fun in a "I think I might die doing this" sort of way.

Well I lived in Washington DC and in Williamsburg for years so my husband and I have done parts of this trip several times. After looking at a map, I determined that we've done the full route from Portland, ME to West Palm Beach, FL. Would love to make it to Miami someday. Favorite along the route would by DC, New York City, and a side trip to Savannah Georgia. I love the East Coast because the states are small so you feel like you've covered a lot of ground. Another fantastic road trip lens!

I-81 is a much more senic route if you are not in any rush

Our son and daughter in law live in DC and they take 95 but we have not tried that route. I think it would have to be easier than going through the mountains but not as pretty.

Love the pics. I drove the New England stretch a few times when I was in the States. Love Rhode Island and places like Mystic.

I never drove this route without stopping many times. My family would ask me why it took me so long compared to everyone else.
  • QueSea Jun 28, 2009 @ 8:35 am | delete
Very interesting. Covers a part of the country I have yet to see. We hope to make the trip sometime soon.

Real nice Lens. I especially like the Key West part. Its so different from your starting point. Travelers be patient from Boston to Virginia heavy traffic but the sights will be your reward.

We are headed north on route 95 in about a month. Thank you for a preview of our trip.

This was a fantastic lens that brought back a lot of fond memories. I have been up and down the I-95 from New York to Florida more times than I can count. It's been a couple of years now since I have been out to the east coast, but plan on being out there once again in the very near future.

I'm glad you posted your comment on my Appalachian Trail lens, leading me back here. I'm lensrolling as well. I've driven I-95 many times, some of those trips from New England to Florida. I remember being driven down to Georgia to begin my A.T. thru-hike, now and then seeing an overpass or sign with "Appalachian Trail" on it, and I'd get so excited with a twang of nerves at the same time. Life went from 65mph to 3mph tops overnight.

Ah, great lens -- personally, I'm not into US road trips but Europeans ones when I can get the old hubby to commit to one! We've got one coming up in a few months -- can't wait. My mother is better at the road trips than me -- I prefer to fly. ;)

We will be heading south on 95 very soon for a trip to Virginia and Florida. Perfect timing to have found this lens! Thanks for highlighting some of the cities along the way that I might not have thought about including in our trip.

Great Lens! I drive on this road at least once a year to visit family back home in New York. Boy, is it tiring. Maybe this year I will take a few Exits and go exploring to see what I find since I now own a GPS (greatest invention ever).

Great lens! I'm heading out tomorrow. (SC to MN and back). I go every year, but try to go a slightly different route each time. Coming across something unexpected can be fun.

My inlaws want to do a back roads driving tour from their home in Pawleys Island SC to Maine or at least thru VA. Can you suggest a site or book that would be helpful in coordinating this for them? Thanks for your time.

Another beauty! I've been on the I-95 in Philadelphia, but didn't go too far. It looks like a fun road trip. Welcome to All Things Travel.

You're right, Silver Lotus, South of the Border should be included...we'll make a section for that soon. And that's where we read the sign "a trip down the interestate does not a vacation make...". It's a tourist trap for sure, but it deserves a little spot on here.
  • Silver_Lotus Jun 21, 2008 @ 1:30 pm | delete
Saw you on the stores board. Wonderful idea for a lens - 5 stars! I live near I-95, travel on it regularly, and have done the entire route several times. I've heard that "South of the Border," which used to be one of the all-time great tourist traps, has fallen into disrepair. Too bad, because otherwise it would have to be included in this lens!
  • sisterra Jun 20, 2008 @ 1:50 pm | delete
Fantastic lens! I too have driven this route a couple times.
