My Review

I am Legend is the novel that has been made into three movies, Vincent Price's The Last Man on Earth, the Charlton Heston film, Omega Man, and the Will Smith film, I am Legend. While each of these movies are excellent, the novel is different, and in my opinion better.

The story is set in a post holocaust 1974 and is told through the eyes of Robert Neville who seems to be the last survivor of a mutant virus that turned his friends, neighbors, and everyone else into evil, blood thirsty vampires. Neville battles depression and every other emotion imaginable as he deals with being alone, and haunted by the vampires from outside his fortified home.

Over several years, Neville kills the vampires in the day as they sleep. He also experiments with different methods from folklore in repelling and killing vampires. Like many other great stories, this one ends with a surprise ending, one which I was pleased with too.

I Am Legend

In I Am Legend, a plague has decimated the world, and those unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.
