I Challenge You to Focus on "I Am Loved" for One Week

I challenge you to focus on "I am loved" for one week, and share your results with others.

I received a similar challenge from Serge Kahili King. Since then, I've found it to be an excellent tool for coping with the more difficult aspects of my life, and I feel a desire to share my success with others.

We've all met a Negative Nancy or Bruce Bummer. No matter how much we try to direct the conversation to a positive direction, Bruce & Nancy choose repeatedly to bring it back to a negative perspective.

That can happen with our internal dialogue about feeling loved too. This simple process is actually an effective way to change our internal Negative Nancy into a habit of choosing to recognize and feel loved.


What do I mean by focusing on "I am loved"?

It's really simple, just repeat silently to yourself the phrase "I am loved".



Take a few moments whenever you think of it, for example:


When you are happy
When you are under stress
When you are trying to solve a problem
When you don't feel loved
When you have a few moments to spare
When you wake up
When you go to bed
Whenever you are doing a repetitive task
When you ask yourself, "Am I loved?"
Especially when you are depressed


These are just suggestions for a starting point of when to focus on "I Am Loved". The main thing is to focus on it as often as you can remember, and do it when and how works best for you.

Who Loves Me...

You may start to think about what the source of this love is. The answer is something that's individual to each person. It's also something that can change over time to help maintain the effectiveness of the exercise. The source can be your higher power, God, a friend or spouse, a pet, or even nature, yourself, or the universe. Whatever you find is a beneficial source.

Feeling Loved Makes a Difference

When I first started. It quickly made a big difference in my outlook on life. Things got better. I felt less of a need to focus on improving my life...

And then I ran into a rough spot where I got depressed about something. When I looked back, I realized that I had almost completely stopped focusing on "I am loved."

So if you run into a rough spot, think back about how often you have been focusing on "I am loved."

I'm not saying that I don't get depressed anymore. But I am saying that I feel like I'm on more of an even keel. Things still get out of balance, but I am confident that even if things don't turn out the way I want, I can still recover and move on.

When You Don't Feel Loved

How is it that this simple task can make such a difference in my life?


Before I started this exercise, I would feel overwhelmed and retreat within myself. I would simply shut down and get depressed. Now I feel like there is something, or someone that wants to help me. I am more able to stay in the present moment and continue to focus on the task at hand.

I think we all have a basic need to feel loved. The more loved we feel, the happier and healthier we are.

Establish a Pattern of Feeling Loved

The really amazing thing about this is that it establishes a new pattern of the way you feel normally. Feeling loved becomes normal!

Once you've established the pattern it's much easier to maintain.

Specific thoughts or feelings are closely tied to a specific series of electrical impulses through the neurons in your brain. Each time a specific thought occurs it reinforces the corresponding physical path through your brain's neurons.

This reinforcement makes that same physical sequence of neurons more likely to fire again, and also makes it more likely that we will experience the same thought again.

Once you've established the pattern it's much easier to maintain.

The really great thing about this is that we can establish a new pattern of thinking with a little diligence. And once that new pattern of thinking is established, it's way easier to trigger that thought again.

So thinking "I Am Loved" as much as you can for one week actually creates a new pattern of thought in your brain. Once that pattern is established it's much easier to return to a state of feeling loved.

My own experience has been that sometimes it may take a while to get back to feeling loved, but often it can happen in a matter of moments.
