Top Ten - Things I Love About Tacoma

Ranked #6,922 in Travel & Places, #188,418 overall

Tacoma, Washington... This One Is For You!

How I do hurt and long for you, dear Washington.

I Miss:
The smell of a moss infested forest.
The near constant light rain that Washingtonians have declared mist.
The endless supply of crab and salmon.
Starbucks on every corner.
New bands and old bands everywhere.
Geoducks.

The Top Ten - Things That I Love About Tacoma!

10. Johnny's Seasoning

About Ten Miles From Point Defiance

When I grew up, Johnny's Seasoning was the place that I looked forward to going. It was like a fisherman's market of spices, and visiting there always meant that my father had some fresh seafood to cook or salmon to smoke. That was -still is- the best seasoning that you can get for fish and fries.

9. The Smoke Stacks

On Ruston Way a Few Miles from Point Defiance

pt-defiance

I know this seems odd based on the fact that I am so environmental. The one thing that I would like to point out is that these smoke stacks were never used in my memory. I didn't know what they meant. They had a different meaning to me back then.

Today they no longer stand, a symbol of a fixed past. The symbol of a fixed past is now held in their absence.

8. Never Never Land

Inside Point Defiance

pt-defiance

Every time I go to Tacoma I visit Point Defiance and all that it contains. My son has been through Never Never Land, the excitement oozing from him as he ran from one -as big as life- fairytale to the next. This was a magical place for me back then, and it still is at forty.

7. Narrows Bridge at Sunset

Can Be Viewed from Five Mile Drive Inside Point Definace

pt-defiance

I'm not sure what else to say here. I know that the Narrows Bridge has a windy past. That being said, it is still a beauty to behold. Simply breathtaking don't ya think?

6. Old Fort Nisqually

Inside Point Defiance

pt-defiance

I have to admit that this always seemed more of a guy thing when I was younger. That being said, I finally went into Fort Nisqually one year when I went home for a visit with my son. It's just not a Fort, you see. They have a small village with people that are dressed in period clothes that are doing period things. It's like an interactive small town village/museum. They even had The General Store in which I bought postcards to mail back to most of the people that I worked with. I mailed them from the General Store as well.

5. Almond Roca

About Ten Miles From Point Defiance

Fund raising in the south revolves around Krispy Kreme donuts. When I was young our fundraisers were selling Mountain Bars door to door. I still buy Almond Roca every time I see it. It is by far the best candy that I have ever had the pleasure of eating. This reminds me of childhood times when selling to the neighbors was still permitted because you knew them all.

Straight out of Tacoma, baby! (O;

4. Japanese Garden

Inside Point Defiance

Pt-Defiance-Pagoda

As a child, I always wanted to be married here. I spent many, many, many of my lifetime moments in the Japanese Gardens, and I do not regret a single one. If I ever get married again -traditionally or spiritually- I want it to be here.

3. Beluga Whales at the... You Guessed It

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

Pt-Defiance-Zoo-and-Aquarium

Yet another place I visit every time I go home. Everyone else travels the Zoo as I watch the beluga whales. You can put your hand on the glass and they rub up against it as if they are trying to allow you a lingered pet, and then the circle around for more love. They are probably the single, most beautiful creatures that I have ever had the honor of encountering.

2. Ruston Way

A Few Miles From Point Defiance

pt-defiance

Ruston Way. Wow. What can I say. It is a beauty to behold if you can stand the smell when the tide is low. A low tide never bothered me much. This is the first place I head when I arrive home, and it's very hard to get me to leave. I think I might live there in a box if they would allow me.

1. Mount Rainier

Viewable From Point Defiance

pt-defiance

This is where I spent a good deal of my childhood. We owned property in Ashford. My Dad has actually put it in a trust for us eight kids. My mother bought almost eight acres so we could each have one. When I travel O.B.E (Out Of Body Experience), I usually visit Ashford. I'm absolutely sure that it's because I need to see the glorious, steadfast, majestic Mount Rainier.

Wait. One for you, Pops!

The Union Depot

pt-defiance

I spent many hours looking at the Union Depot, as it was across the street from my fathers gas/service station.

I love you dearly, Pops.

Nice lens. I live in Monroe Wa. Only been here 2 years. Because of your lens I think I will go visit the fort and Point Defiance.
  • callinsky Jul 14, 2010 @ 10:17 pm | delete
Oh, Bryan, you really should. Make it a day trip. Take the whole family. They will LOVE it. It is sooooo beautiful. Go before summer is over. The Zoo is so wonderful, five-mile-drive is wonderful, Old Fort Nisqually is wonderful. Stop at Owens Beach too (inside Point Defiance) You will have to drive down Ruston Way on your way there, too. I don't know what shape never never land is in anymore. Even when it's not painted all bright it's still fun for the kids.

Although your list has nothing to do with where I am from, it made me think of those little things I miss about my hometown. The local seasoning (number 10) reminded me of a favorite local BBQ sauce.

    Great job on this.

Awesome lens! i've been all over the pacific northwest - redmond, seattle, tacoma, port angeles, forks, ocean shores, quinalt, hurricane hills....it's simply amazing. That was the best trip i've had in my life, rolling mountains, snow capped Mt. Rainier and Mt. Olympus, the reindeer in the Olympic rainforest...sorry if i'm a bit off topic, but i tend to get nostalgic! After reading this article i fell like going right now :(
  • callinsky Jul 5, 2010 @ 6:10 pm | delete
Yes. I love all those places in Washington. There is NO need to be sorry. It's not off topic at all.

My mother was born and raised in Alaska. She would talk about Alaska with such love that you would think Alaska was her one and only lost love. I never understood it then, but I do now. I have been all over and seen many places that are beautiful. None are even close to Washington though. It's just not the same.

    Thank you so much for visiting. (O;
