I Cant Stop Eating Because I'm Trapped In My House!

I read a post a short time a go from some one who wrote, "I have zero self-control, it's like a subconscious impulse for me to go to my kitchen and start stuffing my face in. Has it always been this way? No, it's just because I'm trapped in my house and incredibly bored and it's a subconscious impulse, like blinking."

How do I control this "I cant stop eating" disorder?

  • You can go outside can you go out for walks. Even short, brief walks are good for you.

  • Do you have any hobbies? People do eat when they are bored all the time. Find activities that you like to do to fill in your time instead of eating.
  • Drinking water or tea also is very good for you, and will help you feel full..

  • If you want to eat, than eat healthy snacks. Do not eat junk food all the time. Only keep fruit and vegetables, yogurt, and healthy foods in the home to reduce your temptations. Prevent the temptation from even being there in the first place..

Many people are "trapped' in their houses, or jobs or hamster wheel lives. They cant stop eating from boredom and/or Depression. You can do something about it by making small changes once a day. For example, if you are really stuck at home you are going to need to move/exercise more. Make a pact with your self that if you really are going to give in to a food craving you have to do 5 push ups or walk up and down the stairs 2 times before you can touch the refrigerator handle. With increased exercise comes a reduction in appetite. That is a fact.

Another small change would be a "junk food trade". You will have to eat ½ an aple or 2 carrot sticks before you will allow yourself to munch on junk food. No good food then no junk food. Stick to this small change and you will win the "I cant stop eating" war.

While these may seem to be insignificant changes, you can burn a lot of calories a day by making that small change in your routine.

I cant stop eating because I am depressed

Depression and food

According to Healthy Place, eating disorders go hand in hand with depression. According to the mental health site, "Depression is not biased - it affects anyone at any race and age and economical standing. It can strike at any moment; it doesn't need a tragic incident to trigger onset. Over 19 million over age 18 are considered to be clinically depressed, or 1 out of 5 people in general society. Depression is so common that it is second only to heart disease in causing lost work days."

Pills can boost the treatment process but a good therapist will treat the eating disorder as well to eventually ween someone off pills. Proper food can be a real depression treatment instead of pills to help stop uncontrolled eating.
Here are some ideas:

Eat plenty of fresh food
Fresh fish, especially pink salmon, fresh tuna or mackerel as they have a good influence on the serotonin production. Try three times a week or more.

Eat healthy carbohydrates
Whole grain wheat bread, oat cereal (porridge oats), fresh fruits (citrus fruits, banana, pomegranate, apple, pineapple, blueberries) fresh vegetables (beans, peas, carrots, tomatoes). If you are on a low carbohydrate diet it can contribute to your bad mood.

Add Garlic
Garlic has beside its many health improving properties a slight mood elevating effect. Eat a minimum of one clove of freshly chopped garlic a day.

Natural Tryptophan
The amino acid tryptophan has been found to relieve depression. Natural sources include turkey, chicken, fish, peas, nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and peanut butter. Where possible eat them with carbohydrates, such as potatoes, pasta and rice, which facilitates the brain's uptake of tryptophan.

Natural Spices and Herbs
Natural seasonings, like cayenne pepper, rosemary, ginger, cardamom and basil have proved uplifting properties. Add them regularly and generously to your dishes while reducing salt.

Citrus Fruit Juice
Drink plenty of freshly squeezed lemon juice (lemonade). Any citrus juice , orange or grapefruit, will help kill the cravings and help your body.

Earl-Grey Black Tea
The scent of Earl-Grey Tea comes from Bergamot oil, which is a time-proved mood enhancer. A cup of Earl-Grey Tea (without milk or sugar) 3 times daily keeps you alert and fit. You can add some fresh lemon juice too.

Mineral Water
Mineral waters can help restore some lost minerals to the body. Drinking any water or tea will aid in reducing cravings.

Cut Out Caffeine and Alcohol!
Cut back or even give up coffee or cola. Caffeine suppresses serotonin production and has been linked to depression. Alcoholic drinks may initially lift your mood, alcohol is actually a depressant.

Stop Eating Junk!
What happens when you put a low grade fuel, like kerosene, into your car engine. If it started at all it would not last long. Your body is one big engine with trillions of cells needing proper fuel. If you fed them nothing but junk what is inevitably going to happen? You will break down.
Eating red meat, canned, frozen and junk foods that are loaded with fat, sugar and salt all contribute to an unbalanced and unhealthy human "engine". Regular consumption leads to heaviness and a low, depressed mood.

Help! I Cant Stop Eating - I Am Stressed Out!

I AM BURNED OUT!

Some people start binge eating because they are stressed out. As you know, stress can raise blood sugar levels and can cause you to change your daily routine. "I cant stop eating" is something you can stop if you find healthy comfort food and manage your stress.

Here are a few suggestions on how to deal with this situation:
Learn to relax.
Try deep-breathing exercises during which you close your eyes, consciously relax your body and focus on your breathing for five to 20 minutes each day. Try to breath deeply and remove all other thoughts from your mind.
Try an audio-tape progressive relaxation exercise
Look in your local bookstore or online for ideas. These tapes usually have pleasant background music or sounds from nature and they lead you through relaxation exercises.
Erase bad thoughts from your mind
Try placing a rubber band loosely on your wrist. Every time you have a negative thought, snap the rubber band. This will remind you to think positively.
Memorize a prayer or poem
Repeat it to yourself every time you have a negative thought or feel yourself under increasing stress. Look through favorite books of poetry for ideas, or ask your pastor for help.
Exercise
Daily exercise really works to reduce stress. Try a daily 15 to 20 minute walk to clear your head. Find positive thoughts during your exercise time. If you can't get out to take a walk, learn yoga or try stretching in your shower or walking stairs. Do what you can, but try to commit to 15 to 20 minutes of some movement per day.
Make yourself goodie bag
Regarding snacking on "comfort foods" , accept that you can't go back on what you have already consumed, but know that you can take it one step at a time, one day at a time. Prepare the next day's snacks the night before. Goodie bags can include a combination of:
  • a hard-boiled egg, red-pepper strips and four to six whole-grain crackers

  • one cup lite soy milk or skim milk and one English muffin topped with a smear of peanut butter or all-fruit spread

  • three graham crackers and an orange

  • half a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich on whole-wheat bread

  • apple slices and one small sugar-free yogurt.

  • Most importantly, don't give up! If you try one of these ideas and it doesn't seem to work, don't put the blame on yourself. You're too important to not give yourself every possible chance, you need to find out the real reason for I cant stop eating
