Zorba the greek (film)

Zorba the Greek -originally Alexis Zorbas- is a film released in 1964, directed by Michael Cacoyannis. The film is based on the novel Zorba the Greek, written 1946 by Nikos Kazantzakis and has great music by Mikis Theodorakis.

The original version of the film is in black and white but there is a version in colour too. I highly recommend the original, in black and white, because it highlights the movies profundity.

The central aim is the friendship between Zorba -a middle aged, nearly old greek- and Basil, a young English writer of Greek ancestry.
When Basil was going to travel from England to Crete, to take care of his inheritance (some land and an abandoned mine), he meets up whit Zorba at a pub, just before the journey.
Zorba persuades Basil to hire him to help work on the mine and they become inseparable. They go through many things together and their affect on each other begins to grow ...
The contrast between the reserved, inhibited Basil and Zorba's optimism, energy and spontaneous will for living life is enormous!
With Zorba to guide him, Basil finds out how to really live...

Why I Love ZORBA

At first, I love the fact that the movie hero is a common, old man and not a good looking, handsome youngster.
I love the central aim of the movie, that I think is friendship between two men from different countries who don't belong to the same generation either.
The movie has everything about life, like friendship, love, hate, gambling for power, laughs and tears, life and death...

Zorba the greek is a tribute to life!

The women in Zorba

The oldfashioned, hard way?

It's possible that many people don't like Zorbas way to talk about women, because it seems as he thinks we are "poor things" who have to be protected...
In spite of that -which is without doubt very important- Zorba is to me a very wise and gentle man who loves life and understands human relationships a little bit.
He defends the young widow (Irene Papas - in the picture) at the pub...
and he tried, heroicly and fruitless, to defend her again, when she becomes the subject of a homicidal vendetta by other villagers.
He also shows his kindness when he lets the dying Madame Hortensia (Lina Kedrova) believe that they were going to get married.

The film is oldfashioned about women (the widow is f.ex. accused of adultery because she falls in love with the englishman), but you have to think that "Zorba the greek" tell us a story from 1930, was written in 1946 and filmed in 1964.

Anyway, it can be fascinating to take a trip to a far away land, take a look at the past, and meet other people with different attitudes - compared to todays standards.

The last scene of Zorba

A tribute to life

Basil asks Zorba to teach him how to dance and the friends begin to dance at the beach!
It's at the end of the movie, and it's a very emotional scene.
Perhaps, some tears of joy might appear in your eyes...

Showdown!

Zorbas "crazy" construction (to bring trees from the top of the mountain down to the sea) finished as a catastrophe and eveything falls down!
At first, Zorba and Basil look at each other, wondering what to do, but then...they begin to laugh!

Is it understandable to laugh when something you've built falls down?

I don't think it is, because it's not funny!
