Anyone with any form of Inflamatory bowel disease can tell you these are agonizing conditions. Even when in remission you can suddenly "get sick" and feel very ill, tired, in extreame pain. Of course, this is if you are able to achive remission.

This lens will attempt to sort out the good the bad and the ugly from all the information out there on IBD.

Another important distinction must be made, there is a big differance between IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) and inflamatory bowel disease. IBS basically means "yes, you are sick, you have digestive problems, but we can't find anything wrong with you and don't know why you are sick". IBD is a disease that causes intestinal swelling, bleeding, ulcers, joint pain, skin rashes, mouth sores and more. When biopsies of the intestinal wall are taken changes in the way it looks can be seen under a microscope, and often when undergoing a procedure like a sigmoidoscopy the inside of the colon has visible sores.

My Ulceratrive Colitis Story

I was not diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis until the summer of 2002 when I was a 34 year old wife, mother, artist and full time employee. I'd been having symptoms for a couple of years but I thought I was having reactions to things like pesticides on produce and growth hormones in meat.

It was not till after a ear infection treated with antibiotics that I had my first truly bad flare. I think I was already having my flare before that because I remember being to sick to donate blood after 9/11. Starting in January I spent many days in urgent care and my primary care doctors office before I was refered to a gastroenterologist. My flare went untreated from Late October 2001 till midsummer 2002 and even then it took over a year and two rounds of steroids to get it under control.

This disease has affected all aspects of my life. My kids now have a stick in the mud Mom, I miss work when I have to keep running to the bathroom. My art career stalled, my husband now has to deal with a sick wife, myu parents and sister worry about me all the time. I have no energy, I take pills all day. Stress makes me sick, food makes me sick, missing a pill makes me sick, being too hot/cold makes me sick.

Somedays I hate my own guts, literally! I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired. And when I don't feel tired and have a good day I have to be careful not to overwork myself or, guess what, I get sick for the next few days.

Technially I am in what is called remission. Which I think is like being balanced on the edge if a cliff. Sure, everything might seem fine but one false move and there you go!

I still paint and work on marketing my art, but I have given up, at least for now, on my dream of breaking into public art.

People with IBD

People with IBD may spend time in the hospital and close to their bathroom at home. But they also take vacations, go out to dinner, relax with their friend, go to school and work and live full and rewarding lives. Here are some pictures from the Flickr.com site with examples of what people with IBD do and go thru.

About kimsart

My name is Kim Wyatt, I'm a visual artist with a passion for painting horses. My art is full of bright vibrant color, energy and humor.I studied art at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon California which is in San Diego County and At San Diego State University. I personally belive that the study of art never ends and knows no bounds. Everything I do and think can find it's way into my art. I am an avid reader and I consume vast amounts of knowledge through reading all kinds of materials. I love reading fiction and nonfiction equally.

One of my favorite ways to spend my days is taking my boys to the beach. We have a great time and I fill my sketchbook with studies of the beaches and bays around San Diego, drawings of palm trees, my boys enjoying the ocean, seashells, seagulls, boats, and anything else that catches my eye.
