Why I Like to Oil Paint

This picture of a lake in my back yard is a place for 1000 paintings.

* I LIKE THE SMELL OF OIL PAINTS. Do you like the smell? To me the smell starts the juices flowing. I start to get motivated to paint.

* I LOVE THE FEEL OF PUSHING, PULLING, AND SCULPTING THE PAINT.

* I ENJOY THE CHALLENGE OF CONVEYING MY VISION OR CONCEPT OF A PAINTING TO THE VIEWER.

* I LIVE FOR THE FINISHED PAINTING. TO SEE THE CONCEPT PORTRAYED AS I ENVISIONED IS WONDERFUL.

* I LOVE HOW PAINTING OPENS YOUR EYES TO ALL THAT IS AROUND YOU. COLOR, SHAPE, VALUE, COMPOSITION, ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE IN EVERYTHING WE SEE. ONLY THE ARTIST SEES THEM AS A POTENTIAL PAINTING.

ART IS LIKE PROJECT MANAGEMENT.

My Thoughts on Art and Life.

I was a project engineer by profession. I enjoy project management because one had to be creative to manage and solve problems that surfaced during a project. I enjoy problem solving.

Oil painting is much the same as project management. Problem solving is the bulk of the work in any form of art. How do I convey my intentions? A big problem to solve every new painting or project%u2026..

How to produce a successful painting.
1) Have a purpose. Why am I doing this?
2) Expected out come. What is the painting going to look like?
3) Concept. How are you going to get to your expected result?
4) Planning. In art you do sketched, color studies, small paintings. Project management you have a time line that lays out all the anticipated steps.
5) Action. Paint and follow the plan
6) Follow up. Revise the painting.
7) Closure. End of project. Sign the painting

There are many areas where the concepts of project management and art are similar. Engineering and art are also closely related.

Maybe all Art Majors should be required to take courses in Project Management and Engineering. Likewise all Project Management and Engineering Majors should be required to take Art classes.

Well that's it for today.
Stay tuned for more.
