TCM is my drug of choice

Others might wallow in alcohol, gorge on chocolate or bet it all on the ponies. But when I'm feeling blue all I have to do is turn on the TV and let the dulcet tones of Robert Osborne, or the patter of Cary Grant and Roz Russell wash over me.

I'm so confused

Which Classic Movie Star Are You?

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor

You have had a tumultuous life, morphing into different personas through the decades. In your youth you were the lovely child, but as you grew you became the scheming vixen, the wanton woman and eventually the forsaken wife. Though unlucky in love your talent has always been your strength and you have never lost sight of you're goal, to continue being a star.

Take the quiz!

According to the Movies.com Which Movie Star Are You Like? quiz, you're:

Jennifer Aniston

America's Sweetheart? Try America's Victim! The title may help you spark that big-screen career you've long been hungering for, but we're guessing you're probably nobody's victim. You've always been the most likely among your Friends to have a big-screen career - no victimization necessary!

Take this quiz at Movies.com

You are KATHERINE HEPBURN:
You are smart, a real thinker. Every situation is approached with a plan. You are very healthy in mind and body. You don't take crap from anyone. You have only a couple of individuals that you consider "real friends". You teach strong family values. Keep your feet planted in them, but don't overlook a bad situation when it does happen.

Steamy

The sexiest pinups of the 1950s

The most desirable women of the day came in two flavors: Blonde or Brunette, either way she was stacked. The look was exemplified by movie stars Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell and copied by legions of pin up girls and actresses.

In the noir

Barbara Stanwyck

Excellent look at six Stanwyck movies.

"What makes Stanwyck tick? That's a continual question regarding the actress who played, among other characters, tramps and heiresses, wives and writers, scammers and showgirls."

Elegy for the slip

You don't see the full slip anymore these days--either in the store or in movies. There are camis, teddies, bustiers, thongs and tap pants, but a woman onscreen wearing any of these never packs the punch of Liz in her slip. Probably because it's not unusual to see women on the street wearing much less.

Top 10 Movie Stars

  • 1. Cary Grant, 2. Clark Gable, 3. Gary Cooper: The holy trinity, the triumvirate. Each had his own distinctive style.

    4. Audrey Hepburn. Sui generis, no one looked like her or wore clothes so well. When she's on screen, you don't notice anyone else.

    5. Ingrid Bergman. Has anyone ever glowed the way Bergman did?

    6. Myrna Loy. From the Thin Man movies to Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House to Airport 1975, for crying out loud. She worked forever and always delivered.

    7. Jean Harlow. Sassy, sexy and spunky.

    8. Humphrey Bogart. The one and only.

    9. Russell Crowe, my favorite contemporary actor.

    10. Montgomery Clift. Beautiful, brooding and doomed.

The first summer blockbuster

Robin Hood

The original man in tights, Errol Flynn became the king of the swashbuckler and the prototype for the action hero of today. When Flynn had his first star turn, in the 1935 movie Captain Blood, the reviewer for the New York Times noted that the actor playing the hero was "criminally good-looking" and praised his audacious performance. Flynn's portrayal of Sir Robin of Locksley cemented his status as a superstar.

Remakes that shouldn't have been

From Here To Eternity - Kiss scene on the beach

Famous kiss scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr from the movie "From Here To Eternity". Burt Lancaster plays a sergeant who is having an affair with the wife of his Commanding Officer (Kerr). The scene caused an outrage in 1953 because of the context and because of the frank sexuality of Kerr's character. I think that this is one of the best kiss scene ever filmed.

The most romantic movie of all time

They'll always have Paris

Its plot is laughable: If Czech patriot Victor Laszlo could just get a hold of those letters of transit signed by General DeGaulle, he could travel anywhere and the Nazis couldn't lay a hand on him. And a scene in which an entire nightclub sings "La Marseillaise" in defiance of the jack-booted Nazi thugs who occupy Casablanca would be incredibly hokey in any other movie.

And yet it works.

The perfect wife

The Fountainhead

Is the book as absurd as the movie?

In praise of hats

My nostalgia for hats is fed by watching old movies. In Mrs. Miniver, Greer Garson's final indulgence before the war was a silly hat that she had been pining for for weeks. And in The Bishop's Wife, Loretta Young desperately wants a certain hat for Christmas.

'It makes us happy just to look at him'

Religion at the movies

  • Favorite movie with a religious theme: Black Narcissus--Deborah Kerr, who also played a nun in Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison, leads a group of Anglican nuns to build a mission in the Himalayas but the air is too thin up there. Gorgeous, gorgeous movie.

  • Favorite movie nun: You can keep Julie Andrews. Audrey Hepburn in A Nun's story wins the movie nun title hands down. Sister Luke, who becomes a nun in order to work in a hospital in Africa, struggles with the vows of obedience and pride from the beginning. And then the Nazis come. Audrey is brilliant.

  • Favorite movie priest: Has got to be Spencer Tracy's Father Flanagan in Boys Town. His motto: There's no such thing as a bad boy. Runners up: Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald in Going My Way.

The Great Ann Miller

The dancing sensation, who died in 2004, was born April 12, 1923. She started working as a dancer at age 14 after her mother moved her to LA to escape a bad marriage. Like other actresses of her time--Ginger Rogers and Bette Davis come to mind--Ann supported her mother whose hearing impairment made it impossible for her to work.

They don't make 'em like that anymore

Sample quote:

The number one book of the ages was written by a committee, and it was called The Bible.

Movie meme I

Boys, girls and the movies

"Guy" movies that I, a woman, love:
  • The Great Escape
  • Patton (What can I say? I love Downtown WWII.)
  • Lawrence of Arabia
  • Zulu
  • High Noon
  • Bull Durham (Not sure if this is a guy movie.)

Movie meme II

Boys, girls and the movies

"Chick flicks" that I, a chick, do not like:
  • The Way We Were (But then I can't stand even the sight of Barbra Streisand)
  • Ghost
  • Titanic
  • The English Patient (To quote Elaine from Seinfeld: Die already!)
  • Pretty Woman

Movie meme III

Boys, girls and the movies

Movies that I, as a hardened, cynical, unfeeling, soulless person tend to break down in tears while watching:
  • Terms of Endearment (Perhaps the world's greatest tearjerker.)
  • Great Escape (I get all choked up when Donald Pleasance a) loses his sight and b) loses his life.)
  • Shadowlands
  • Glory
  • An Officer and a Gentleman

Why do they all look the same?

Models and movie stars

Movie stars, no longer schooled by the studios on dress and deportment, took their cues from Vogue and Women's Wear Daily and hired stylists to ensure that they didn't look foolish come the Oscars. Now one year they all wear vintage, the next they all wear white. Gone are the days when Cher showed up looking like a chandelier and while there are missteps, mostly it's just boring.

Pure romance

Dietrich and Cooper in the desert

Enslaved by love

In her first American film, Marlene Dietrich plays an adventuress who uses her sexuality to get gifts from men--until she meets French Foreign Legionnaire Gary Cooper.

Lana Turner

Musings

Imitation of Life is the tear jerker of all tear jerkers: You know you're being manipulated and that the situations the movie depicts are preposterous, yet by the end you're bawling like a baby.
