AMERICA'S OBSESSION WITH PRIVATE MATTERS
Ranked #6,498 in Culture & Society, #133,961 overall
CELEBRITES ARE ENTITLED TO PRIVACY
PERSONAL LIVES OF CELEBRITIES ARE NONE OF OUR BUSINESS
Privacy rights, stalking and identity theft have become extremely important issues for everyone. I've been trying to figure out when and why Americans started obsessing over the personal lives of celebrities and issues that are none of their business. I think it started a long time ago -
Celebrities, both famous and infamous, have a right to privacy just like any other American citizen. There is a huge difference between mild curiousity and sincere interest in the highlights of a favorite celebrities life and the obsessive attitude that we have a "right" to every detail of the most private personal matters. We do not have that right! Of course, the extreme focus placed on these issues by the media adds fuel to the fire.
Once upon a time, there was no Internet and information was spread by print, the good old newspaper and magazines, and word of mouth, the nightly news. Information was not dispatched instantly because it took time to write, review, edit, print and then on to the consumer. There were no web cams or digital cameras with the ability to upload compromising photos to the Internet at the speed of sound. Notice that I have used the word "information" not "facts". The information distributed may or may not include facts. Without a doubt, the Internet and privacy issues are frequently intertwined.
In the good old days, we heard bits and pieces about celebrities but their private lives were somewhat sheltered from the critical public eye. High profile trials were covered by the media on TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. There were no cameras in the courtrooms. We usually learned more after the fact, i.e. "Helter Skelter" penned by the prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi, gave us a blow by blow account of Charles Manson and the gruesome crimes Charlie and his "family" committed. At that time, I lived in California and most Americans seemed more absorbed in their own lives, their families and friends. Having a full time job (or school) and family seemed to keep most of us engaged in the "pursuit of happiness" - our own, that is.
And then along came the Internet, email and instant everything! Now we nuked our dinner in the microwave or headed to the nearest McDonald's. We stopped taking time to write thoughtful letters (yes, with our own hand) because now we had email or instant messaging. I think all of this fast easy instant everything gave Americans too much free time. Aha, it gave us time to meddle. It gave people access to more information about celebrities and their problems. We could suddenly pay attention to those things that were really none of our business. And cameras were allowed in the courtroom. During the OJ murder trial in California, we watched the trial like soap addicts watch the daily soap. Yes, it's good to know what's happening in our world but maybe, just maybe, some folks are focusing on problems of celebrities to avoid facing their own demons. Maybe? But I am really baffled by the attention given to high profile criminal cases. I semi understand the interest in celebrities (to a point), because we've seen them in movies or on TV. We feel some sort of connection. On the other hand, these people that are defendants in pending murder cases were unknown until they committed a felony. America, what's going on here?

FOCUS ON IMPORTANT ISSUES THAT CAN AFFECT OUR WORLD
We have a world in trouble - it is time to stop worrying about what celebrity did what and why. We have a political system that needs repair. Let's get back to the important issues - focus on healing our world - not the junk we hear about.
MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
MISPLACED FOCUS
WE NEED NEW PRIORITIES
CELEBRITIES ARE REAL PEOPLE
There are so many sad celebrity stories that we've all witnessed in the news. The meltdowns, drug and alcohol abuse, nasty divorces and custody cases, money problems. Wow! Just like you and me. For me personally, the Anna Nicole Smith tragedy stands out. Anna Nicole lost her only son just months after I unexpectedly lost my youngest son. The pain I saw on her face during interviews pierced my heart. Even under the influence of drugs, there was no mistaking the mother's anguish and heartbreak. Anna Nicole was a troubled person most of her life. Instead of criticizing her, we need to reflect on the underlying problems. As a society, we need to be concerned about drug abuse, doctors that over prescribe, pharmacists that dispense without a prescription, and so-called friends who stand by and do nothing to rescue the person from the inevitable downward spiral. Watching someone being filmed in clown face, obviously drugged, should enrage us not entertain us. Try this - think about someone you love and put them in that clown face, drugged out of their mind, and then filmed for the world to ridicule and laugh at. Not really that funny, is it? We're better than that, America.

UNHEALTHY INTEREST IN HIGH PROFILE CRIMINALS
I saw a cartoon recently that showed the jury foreman reading the verdict, "We find the defendant boring". After tuning in to a couple of recent sessions of Headline News and Nancy Grace, the cartoon doesn't seem that funny.
Maybe we need more intervention in severely dysfunctional families, especially when they're facing an unwanted pregnancy. Maybe we should explore some of the organizations working for tougher laws for child abuse and child abduction cases and find out what we can do to help. Or, maybe we could help in the search for a missing child.
We need to turn off the drama of this world. We should be saying "shame on the media for focusing on this junk and exploiting this kind of negativity". On the other hand, if America stopped watching, listening, and calling in to participate in the show, the media would get the message. If America stopped buying the printed trash about celebrities and criminals, those publications would be out of business.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO

We need to take back some control in our lives and pay attention to those things that really are our business. We can spend our time and energy in a constructive productive way. If we look around, there may be a family member or friend that needs our help. Take all that passion and energy and channel it to make a real difference. Volunteering to be a Big Brother or Big Sister could have a direct impact on a life. Let's look for ways to eliminate the situations that create the Casey Anthony's of this world. If there had been early intervention into her life, maybe little Caylee would be alive and Casey would be a productive citizen of society. Instead of using these horror stories as a form of entertainment, we need to stop participating.

- I agree - but the flip side is I also don't think that celebrities should use their celebrity status to shape public policy. Why should their opinion count for more just because they're famous?

- What a great lens! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It would also be helpful to mention the various ways of protecting your identity, for example placing a fraud alert on your credit.
