A MUST-READ FOR CHICAGO SPORTS FANS,MADISONIANS, AND ANYONE WHO'S EVER RENTED A MOVIE THROUGH THE MAIL!

Trapped in a loveless marriage and a dead-end job clerking at a Madison,WI supermarket, die-hard Cubs fan Mark Crizlanek is convinced his life can't get any worse. Then one night during a raging blizzard he meets up with an old high school friend Trevor Gates who brags about his new job with the online movie service ReelSpeedy. He later finds out this is a front for a terrorist operation run by the Cappellas, the most ruthless Mafia family in the Midwest who control their supermarket empire with an iron fist and eliminate anyone who stands in their way with exploding DVD's. Shortly thereafter, his lover Crystal Logan and his manager Stuart Pearson turn up brutally murdered in a store restroom and he finds himself implicated in their deaths.

While awaiting trial, the Cappellas' lawyer makes him an offer he can't refuse: A guaranteed acquittal in exchange for his unconditional participation in an unspecified scheme. Mark, who believes the Cappellas are to some degree responsible for Crystal and Stuart's deaths, agrees to the lawyer's proposition. Unfortunately, despite the attorney and Trevor's best efforts, he is convicted of first degree murder and given 75 years. On the way to the state pen, the Cappellas hijack the prison bus and free Mark. They take him back to Madison where he is ordered to team up with fugitive school shooter Erik Stockton and assassinate Jared Mendota, Mark's former employer and proud owner of the Midwest's largest private collection of Chicago sports memorabilia.

Mark and Erik blow up Mendota's estate with an IVD but their intended victim escapes at the last minute. Even though they are now on the run from both the law and the Cappellas, Mark is compelled to destroy the home of Erik's archenemy in exchange for incriminating information about Crystal's killer. He successfully completes this mission but Erik refuses to fulfill his end of the bargain unless Mark agrees to sell racist signs for his white supremacist uncle. Enraged at the kid's manipulative stubbornness, Mark ties him up in his basement and tries to extract the name of Crystal's killer from him by repeatedly screening a video of a brutal assault on Erik at a party.

When this method of interrogation fails, Mark is about to give up and resign himself to getting the information he needs from Trevor until he sees a news flash about Brett Favre's retirement.

IVOLUTION

From mundane murder mystery to high-octane technothriller

The brainchild for IVD was conceived at, of all places, my grandfather's memorial service almost two years ago when I ran into my godfather, whom I hadn't seen in over ten years. As we discussed our mutual regret over our unnecessary estrangement, I simply could not get the theme from a certain Coppolla epic out of my head as the idea for a novel about a supervisor at a grocery store becoming involved with the mob began to form in my mind. The initial title was "Efficiency" and the original concept had the supervisor instituting a draconian speed scanning program in order to cover up a series of murders. I had barely completed the first chapter when I realized that it would be asking a little too much of myself to pursue such a toothless plot for a year or more and it would be a greater imposition to expect the reading public to digest such insipid blandness.
I had recently signed up with one of the major DVD rental services and was enjoying the convenience and the financial benefits while at the same time wondering if such a benign medium could be used as a weapon of mass destruction. Once this question was absorbed into the narrative, the rest was relatively easy. Most of the supporting cast were inspired by co-workers, classmates, and people in the news with very few changes from the real-life models. The character of Stu Pearson is an exact clone of my former manager (though the supermarket in the book is not based on the store where I currently work as a cashier). Trevor Gates can best be described as the fictitious evil twin of a very slick and manipulative high school friend who could con his associates into doing just about anything for spare change. Erik Stockton was inspired by Eric Hainstock, the notorious Sauk County school shooter. The bulk of the action is set on the Old East Side of Madison where I grew up. There is a tense confrontation with the police on the roof of East High, a harrowing brush with death in the Yahara River, and a fiery showdown at the Garver Feed Mill. My guiding rule until I completed the narrative in early 2008 was to keep potential readers and myself just as much on the edge of our seats as if we were watching an especially gripping action thriller while not making the situations too improbable.
