Images of India...

I left for India in October 2009, not knowing what to expect. I had been warned that I would not like it.
I went armed with my camera, as I always do, hoping to find mystic places, ancient places, interesting architecture.
I found all of the above.

But I also found something more, something which I'm not sure the camera captures. Lighting in India can be tricky, due to smoky haze and brilliant sun, and my camera is only a point-and-shoot.

This page will present my digital images of India...both those which I've deemed to be of enough quality to offer to the public, as well as personal images which have touched my heart forever.

Images of Dharamsala and other Buddhist Sites

Upper Dharamsala, also known as McleodGanj, is a magical place in the Himalayan foothills in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. As the seat of HH the 14th Dalai Lama since his flight from Chinese oppression in 1959, it is also home to a large Tibetan refugee community. The town is more Tibetan, and Buddhist, than Indian, and a fascinating place to explore.

Other images of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and holy sites in India and Nepal are also found in this category.

My time in McleodGanj changed my life, and I encourage you to explore my other pages on the subject.

Images of Jaipur

Jaipuir, the "pink City" in Rajasthan, is a unique city on the crossroads of history and modern society. Over-flowing with ruins and temples, it also has a thriving 21st century urban area replete with supermarkets and fast food joints.

Images of Udaipur

Udaipur is a fairy-tale city in the state of Rajasthan, whose complex history mingles Mugal (Moghul) as well as native populations. The architecture of Udaipur, as across Rajasthan, is intricate and dream-like. These are a few of my best images from Udaipur.

Images of Mumbai

Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, was the location of the British East India company and a hotbed of Colonialism.
It is a thriving metropolis...massive, over-crowded, noisy. It is fascinating and often filthy. New climbs on top of old, rich on top of poor.

Visiting Foreign places offers so many photo ops.....and often the simple photos are enough for those that haven't been to that country. You did well here....and hope you enjoy your next trip to India just as much.

I think you've shown very well that, even with a point-and-shoot, if one has the right way of seeing, beauty can be captured and communicated to others. Lots of lovely photos of places no doubt a treasure to visit and experience. Again, I'm somewhat envious but, your photos provide something of the next best thing. To bad the photos can't capture the sounds and smells. Wouldn't THAT be something?
