Improv Everywhere - We Cause Scenes

Improv Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 80 missions involving thousands of undercover agents. The group is based in New York City.

Basically, they are a huge improv troupe that causes crazy scenes in crazy places.

Improv Everywhere...

What's this all about?

Well, a group of Actors/Improvists known as agents go out on what they call missions. Improv Everywhere's missions might be defined by some as obscure events designed to make people laugh. 'Improv Everywhere' are believers in what they call "organized fun." They take funny ideas and bring them to life. For example, Improv Everywhere once had over one hundred agents dressed in blue shirts and khaki pants walk into a 'Best Buy' and simply stand around like employees. One mission saw Improv Everywhere bring several hundred people to Grand Central Station and simultaneously freeze for five minutes, then continue on as if nothing has happened. Improv Everywhere have been known to greet strangers at the airport with a hero's welcome, stop a suicide jumper (from a 2 foot ledge) and bring a dozen old-style desktop computers into a Starbucks (with free WiFi, of course).

They are... Improv Everywhere

Operation Best Buy

Check this out, a bunch of Improv Everywhere 'agents' went into a 'Best Buy' wearing blue shirts and khaki pants and stood around for a while. Actually, Improv Everywhere did a better job then their actual employees. Where is Chuck when you need him?

This really cracked me up...

Don't you hate it when you are minding you own business at the food court and one of those darn annoying musicals just breaks out. Out of nowhere! Just when you think it's over...

From http://www.ImprovEverywhere.com, 16 agents create a spontaneous musical in a food court in a Los Angeles mall. Using wireless microphones and the mall's PA system, both their voices and the music was amplified throughout the food court. All cameras were hidden behind two-way mirrors and other concealed structures. This is one of over 70 different missions Improv Everywhere has executed over the past six years in New York City. Frozen Grand Central

So you're on your way to work through Grand Central Station and all of a sudden over 200 people suddenly freeze in their tracks. What does this mean? Is the world coming to an end.. or is a new one just beginning?

Frozen Grand Central

The Amazing Hyponotist

This is one of my favorites! The group pretends to get hypnotized. They pretend to do ridiculous things. They pretend to make a woman break up with the boyfriend and fall in love with another man (it's OK she actually 'fell in love' with her real boyfriend) but the crowd did not know. They were not pleased!

Best Game Ever

This is a little league game that the Improv Everywhere troupe treated to the 'major league' experience. They brought fans, cheerleaders, announcers, a huge scoreboard and yes... the blimp! This is one game the kids will never forget!

Best Game Ever

From http://www.ImprovEverywhere.com, a little league baseball game is turned into a major league event. All players, coaches, and parents do not know what is happening. We worked with the league commissioner to get the kids' names and access to the field to setup our equipment the morning of the game. He was the only one in on it. NBC Sports worked with us and got us the jumbotron and the blimp. This is one of over 70 different missions Improv Everywhere has executed over the past six years in New York City. Mobile Desktop

Do you know how many Starbucks offer free WiFi for your laptop computer? Well.. who said it had to be a laptop? As a dozen or so Improv Everywhere agents enter a New York Starbucks with their huge desktop computers and old time huge monitors and set up shop!

Mobile Desktop

From http://www.ImprovEverywhere.com, three agents entered a Starbucks one by one with their own giant desktop computer and CRT monitor rig. They bought coffee and worked at their computers as if they were laptops. One computer even had a Wi-Fi card installed, enabling our agent to surf the web. No Shirts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdeBp8J0rqs

Over 100 Improv Everywhere agents walk into an Abercrombe & Fitch store in Manhattan completely shirtless. Just like the company has in their logo. Let's just say that the management of the store was less than thrilled. They wouldn't even let the gentlemen purchase shirts from the store in order to remain in the store. They had to leave, get shirts and return if they wanted to purchase one. Brilliant logic! Rock on Abercrombe!

No Shirts (111 Shirtless Men in Abercombie and Fitch)

As a former ad person, I had learned of Improv Anywhere a few years ago when we were exploring non-traditional advertising so it was a pleasant surprise running into this excellently-crafted lens on them! Fantastic tribute to such a groundbreaking movement. (:

Great lens! Even if I am wistful!
I was building a lens on Improv Everywhere, got to picking the URL and -- wait, someone already though of it! I came here expecting to find a lens Under Construction -- the claimed URLs usually are -- only to find you did an excellent job, just the sort of thing I had in mind. I can't top that; it would just be duplicating your work!

So I've sprinkled a rating and enjoyed some of my favorite vids again (The Best Game Ever is my favorite).

Note: when you got the code for my "Shameless Plug" widget, you also hotlinked to icons I have stored on my own server. I don't mind, but in return, you gotta visit the lens I made instead, on the background behind the Antwerp Train Station Sound of Music stunt which I bet you know about -- but I found out a little about where it came from. :)

Best Funeral Ever

The prank of all pranks...

On April Fools Day (April 1st), 2009, Improv Everywhere was at it again... but who was the prank really on? The group decided to attend a random funeral and pretend that they knew the dearly departed... Well, not exactly. The "family members" were actually part of the troup as well, however CW11, the news crew that filmed the prank, didn't know that.

People were quite outraged by the prank... until they realized that the entire thing was staged. You can read the commentary on You Tube or at Improv Everywhere's Website.
