Why You Should Improve Your Putting Stroke

Improving your putting is probably one of the last things you think about when considering how to lower your golf score. Considering how golf club manufacturers put so much effort into marketing their newest, longest, lightest, furthest hitting drivers, it's no wonder that putting so often overlooked.

However, if you take the time to count all the strokes you take on the green, you'd see that they account for almost 50% of your total score. This might make you reconsider all the time you spend at the driving range, and get you to work on improving your putting. Just because you can't slice a putt, doesn't mean that you can't improve your putting stroke.

A consistent putting stroke means that you have the ability to control the distance you hit your putts. Watch any PGA or LPGA event and you'll notice that nearly every missed putt stops within ~2 ft of the hole, typically leaving nothing more than a tap-in. This is because professional golfers spend hours practicing their putting.

Putting separates the champions from the runner-ups.

When I first started playing golf, my putting philosophy was to figure out haw fast the green was with my first putt, then try to hit it closer and closer until it eventually dropped in the cup. Needless to say, my typical scores were 110 and above. The most frustrating part was when that first putt would go so far past the hole, my friend would look at me, smile, and say 'it's still your turn'. This is when I realized that I needed to spend more time practicing putting than driving.

During that summer, I develped the putting routine I still use today, including at least 20 minutes on the practice green prior to starting my round. This is because it usually took the Front 9 for me to get comfortable putting, so I always putted better on the Back 9. Now I get all the bad putts, typically from an inconsistent putting stroke, out of the way on the practice green. Now, by the time I get on the first green, I have an idea of the speed required without wasting a stroke to find out. As a result, I was the first of my friends to consistently break 100.

Improve Your Stroke and Putt to Win

Professional golfers never take anything for granted, practicing shots they hope they will never have to hit. Putting, however, is essential to winning, and it requires constant practice.

The same is true for you. There are no 'quick fix' techniques for better putting, because every putt is different. In order to improve your putting, you need to learn how to roll the ball in the right direction at the right speed.

1; You need to determine the proper speed for the ball to go into the hole
2. You need to accurately control the distance the ball rolls so it arrives at the hole at the proper speed
3. You need to be able to read the green in order to properly stroke the ball in the right direction.

Professional golfers already know how to do this, so why not let one teach you!
