Improve Tennis Serve: What Drills Will Help Me Improve?

Drills Can Improve Tennis Serve Quality For Any Player

Every player that I know wishes to improve tennis serve consistency and confidence. The serve can be the most frustrating, infuriating, and maddening shot at times. On the other hand, when you master it you are on top of the world.

The goal of every player is to be able to hit their serve where they want with the type of spin they want in order to dictate the point. For me, it can be the most satisfying part of tennis when I swing one of my friends out wide with a short slice and follow it either with a volley winner or a ground stroke winner. Here are some valuable drills that could help you to accomplish this, too.

A Drill To Improve Tennis Serve Through Your Toss

Repetition is the key to improve tennis serve consistency. The toss is often overlooked but can be the one missing piece of your serving puzzle. You do not need to hit balls to practice a proper toss. You don't even need to have your racket. Just stand like you are about to serve and give some practice throws.

Try to get the ball to spin as little as possible in the air. It should be landing in front of your body when you let it hit the ground.

Practice With Aiming Drills

When players are starting to learn to serve, they have the mind set of simply "get in in, just get it in." At some point these thoughts need to be changed to aiming with the desired spin. In order to improve tennis serve control, you should be hitting a ton of practice serves.

Be mindful of every serve that you are trying. Vary the spin and placement until you can hit it where and how you want. When practicing without a partner, alternate some serves down the middle and swinging out wide. Change between slice and flat hitting. After some time doing this, you will be amazed at your control. Try to remember to plan out every single serve that you are hitting before you toss the ball.

Improve Your Tennis Serve Intensity By Starting Every Set at 4-4.

Getting in the right mindset to improve tennis serve focus can be accomplished with this variation of a regular match. You can extend it and play best of 5 sets with this drill.

What it does is immediately puts pressure on your service game. You will be focused with every serve since every point starts out being vital. As time goes on practicing this drill, the focus and intensity on your service game will be automatic and constant.

A Similar Drill to Improve Tennis Serve is Starting All Games Down 30-40.

This is another drill to practice intense focus. It is the same concept as the above drill in that every point in your service game becomes important and pressure is applied. When you are consistently beginning at 30-40, you will become accustomed to the high percentage serve.

A relenting practice at high percentage shots is a great way to improve tennis serve confidence and accuracy. There are many variations that can be tested to increase the pressure if you would like. You can play tiebreakers in the sets. You can do best of 3, 5, or 7 depending on the amount of time that you have available.
