Improve Your Hockey Speed: Simple Techniques
Ranked #7,331 in Sports & Recreation, #179,005 overall
Technique and Strength are Key Components!
There are (2) main factors to look at when you want to Improve your hockey speed: Strength and Technique. Skating is as much of an art as it is a vital tool in determining your success as a hockey player. Think of it as the paint brush to Michelangelo - without it, he would never have created the Sistine Chapel. Same applies to hockey, without speed, you'll have a hard-time reaching those higher levels.

Technique: Don't Sweat it...
Technique is the artsier side of improving your hockey speed. Many people just say "that's my skating style and that's all there is to it." That may be true, but there is a proven technique that you can model yourself after that will give you the most power out of your stride
One hand vs Two Hands on the Stick: I've heard both theories that one is better than the other in terms of giving you the most speed. In reality, it shouldn't matter that much because in the course of the game, you will be switching from one hand to two hands constantly! About 75% of the game you will have two-hands on the stick for a shot, pass, or stick check, or waiting to receive the puck.
The main thing that I want you, the readers, to understand is that whenever you take a stride, you MUST extend your arms as far out as possible. This applies to both one hand on the stick and two hands on the stick. The reason behind this is that when your arms extend all the way out, so do your legs- it's just natural for your body to do that. Try it out for yourself while running, your strides become longer when you pump your arms further!

Strength: Where you store all of your energy!
If you want to improve your hockey speed, you will need to develop some strength in your legs; there's no way to get around it.Think of it like this, your legs store all of the energy for your stride. When you develop the muscles in your legs, you will have more energy to expend. More energy = more speed!
The best way to accomplish this is through off-ice training! There is a program that I HIGHLY recomend for players of ALL AGES. Check out the link below for HockeySpeedNow.com.
