Save American Political History: Collect Inaugural Covers

Since George Washington's first Inaugural in New York, Americans have collected keepsakes to memorialize the event.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was an active philatelist or Stamp Collector. His first election coincided with a wave of interest in the American philatelic community for cacheted covers to commemorate events.

The net result was the birth in earnest of Inaugural Day Covers commemorating the new or returning chief executive.

In FDR's case, there were three returning events.

Cacheted covers for all three are much less common than those for the first inaugural in 1933.

This lens will look at some inaugural postcards from earlier years and then some of the cachets used for FDR's first and subsequent inaugurals.  It continues with some hard to find Truman covers and then looks at Ike and skips to Richard Nixon's tumultuous term with its revolving door syndrome.> I will back fill JFK and add more recent covers as time permits.

ETN Covers offers a wide range of Philatelic covers in my eBay store. ETN Covers

Inauguration Day postmark for Jan. 20, 2009.

Get your own Barack Obama Inauguration Cover

I have prepared a small assortment of Inaugural covers for Barack Obama's Inauguration. An example is above. I will send you one for $10 postpaid or 3 for $25 while supplies last. I have less than 50 of these. It took almost five months for me to get them back from the post office where they received the official Inauguration day cancel on Jan 20, 2009 in Washington DC.

The cachet is from a Souvenir poster the Move On.org people gave to supporters after the election. I donated an extra bit to get 50 of them, which I had to cut down to fit on the envelopes.

Send me an email at enetwal@gmail.com to reserve one or more. I prefer payment to my paypal account which is also enetwal@gmail.com. If you prepay via paypal and I run out, I will refund your money in full. First come first serve.

Pre FDR Inaugural Commemoratives

Picture Post Cards, Scarce Cachet

Picture postcards caught the event for Americans in their heyday in the early 1900's.

In the picture postcard below President Taft gives his Inaugural Address on March 4th, 1909.

Inaugurals are a great time for political demonstrations as captured in this day before inaugural Suffragette Demonstration prior to Wilsons's Inauguration in 1913

Cacheted covers from before 1933 are scarce. Below is a cover postmarked Boundbrook, NJ with a commemorative rubber stamp cachet. The airplane in the upper left is a cut out pasted to the cover. The cover itself is franked with the popular C11 Beacon air mail stamp on March 4, 1929.

Inaugural Covers make the Big Time

Franklin Roosevelt did not win the election because he was a stamp collector, but it's clear many stamp collectors promoted his candidacy based on that fact. And they were eager to record the victory on inaugural day, March 4, 1933.

The event was historic in that it was the last March Fourth Inaugural date. A Constitutional amendment pushed the Inauguration date forward to January 20th as it is today.

The first example below show that cachets can also be used to state positions. Buy American was clearly a position supported by the New York American.

Herbert Hoover was the defeated outgoing President whose retirement is noted below.

Inaugurals are special. A direct lineage that starts with George Washington, as acknowledged in this Morristown, NJ cachet honoring a Philatelic president.

Roosevelt didn't squeak into office, he won decisively.

Beyond the First FDR Inaugural

Far Harder to find.

By the second inaugural in 1937, printed cachets became the norm, however demand lessened. Thus they are scarcer today particularly when compared to the volume of 1933.

But they are more interesting. Such as this Leo Stietz caricature canceled aboard the USS Tattnall.

Sietz Tattnall

Cancels aboard US Naval Ships continues with one canceled on the USS New York.

USS New York

The final cover canceled US Receiving Station, Washington DC also notes that it "Rained Heavily." Not an auspicious start for the first Jan 20 Inaugural date.

Rained Heavily

Third Inaugural

The Third Inaugrual Covers continues the Naval tradition with a cover canceled at the US Naval Hospital Station in Philadelphia. It notes the first three terms and the smashing of precedent.

The USS Potomac Cachet and Cancel is less controversial. The Three Bar cancel notes FDR"S Third Inaugural. The Potomac was used as the "Presidential Yacht" during Roosevelt's presidency.

A Death in Office

Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on April 12th.

L.W. Staehle created two covers commemorating FDR's death. The first canceled in Washington on April 12th shows a flag at half staff.

The second Staehle was a first for Fluegel.

The first Fluegel First Day cover was the 3ct FDR Memorial issue released on June 27th. Over two months later.

One of more common cachets is a handstamp showing the capital in a rectangular box with text around.

It appears to come in at least three varieties.

Eisenhower Inaugural Covers

The General Leads the Nation

Dwight David Eisenhower or Ike as he was called by a grateful nation took office January 20, 1953. By then NATO was already established and the beginnings of the cold war was evident. Before he left office he warned the nation to be wary of the Military Industrial Complex. A disturbing comment from a General of the Army.

An Artcraft Inaugural Cachet from the Ike's First Inaugural

The more colorful Fluegel Cachet is less common and sought after because of it's striking colors in a black and white era.

The Second Inaugural occurred on a Sunday. While some covers are known postmarked on the 20th, most were postmarked the next day January 21. This is an Artcraft Cachet

Ike's Second Inaugural with a Fleetwood Cachet

Ike's Second with a Fluegel Cachet

This last cover is actually a Kennedy Inaugural Day Cover, but honor's the outgoing President with some tributes to the nation's accomplishments under his stewardship.

Richard Nixon The Revolving Door in the Highest Places.

Inaugural Covers and more...

Richard Nixon had a troubled presidency, resulting in more than the traditional inaugural day cover. This section will do an overview of that period of American History with a selection of covers from my eBay store inventory.

Depending on when you see this these covers may of may not still be for sale.

Some I have Duplicates, Others are one of a kind, at least to me.

We start with the first Inauguaral in Jan 20, 1969. An invitation cachet sponsored by the George Washington Masonic Stamp Club.

Despite the protests of a youth movement that was adamantly opposed to the war in Vietnam, Richard Nixon was overwhelmingly reelected in 1973 despite my personal best efforts on behalf of George McGovern.

The next cover is a Sarzin Metalic cachet. Canceled Inaugural Day January 20, 1973.

Spiro Agnew's alliterative rhetoric caught some fancy, but his tax evasion culpability revolved the first door. His resignation was made October 10th, 1973.

With the Vice Presidency vacant, Richard Nixon Nominated Gerald Ford to take the place of Spiro Agnew.

Things started getting hot in Washington in July of 1974. On the 27th, the House Judicary Committee voted a Bill of Impeachment against President Richard Nixon.

On August 8th, Richard M Nixon announced his resignation.

And so, Gerald Ford rises to the Presidency, and America has a new First Family.

But now a new Vice President is needed. And so, Nelson Rockefeller takes the Oath of Office on Dec 19th, 1974. Leaving America with an un-elected President and Vice president.

Let me Build a Lens About Your collection.

Just Let Me Sell it for you!

The ETN Presents Auctions Series Seeks to Present "Collections That Tell a Story" with Postal History as the Medium.

Today, most major philatelic auction houses tend to shun individual covers expected to bring less than $250-300. For most collections, that means they will cherry pick your top items, and toss the balance in a box to sell for pennies on the dollar.

ETN Covers hopes to fill that gap by offering a two-fer for the collector.

Effective eBay marketing of your collection by a decade plus eBay powerseller with 99.9% positive feedback rating...

And the preservation of your collection as a Squidoo Lens, or other web presence.

This is what I call Philatelic Catch and Release. It permits you to retain pride of ownership in your collection, even after it has been dispersed into the hands of other collectors eager to add your items to their collections. A way to have your cake an eat it too, if I may add another metaphor.

So, if you have a collection gathering dust, or plateaued out for all practical purposes, why not pass it on to the collecting community? There is an eager market for better material.

The best way to share your collection with others may be to do just that. Share it with others. Let new collectors use your material to build their dream collection.

While they are enjoying their portion of your collection, you will retain bragging rights to your entire collection, virtually online. You will still be able to display it, if not hold it. Should you chance on to the 'holy grail' cover that has eluded you all these years, you will still value it as a single, because you already have had the rest.

If you have a particularly informative collection, your web presence will allow others, long into the future, to value the completeness you achieved, and the insight your collection was able to illuminate, even though its pieces may by then be far flung.

ETN Covers specializes in US philatelic covers of all sorts, but is known to dabble in other arenas as well.
