Your Opinion of Your Own Self-Worth
There will never be any shortage of people willing to share their opinion regarding THEIR perception and opinion of YOUR worth. It is critical, however, to decide how much value the individual has to you and, therefore, the value of their opinion. Furthermore, so many opinions are rendered with little regard to the facts and so you must determine if their opinion is based on fact and is, therefore, an accurate assessment or whether it is simply an opinion.
Constructive criticism offered on the basis of an accurate assessment can be one of the most valuable resources for the purposes of Personal Development, if provided by someone qualified to provide such criticism. Simple criticism from unqualified sources, offered as an opinion, is nothing more than mental pablum and needs to be avoided, if possible, or ignored.

Self Esteem
What is the value you place upon yourself?
A Definition
What is it?
"Self-esteem is a term used in psychology to reflect a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her own worth.Self-esteem encompasses beliefs (for example, "I am competent-incompetent") and emotions (for example, triumph-despair, pride-shame). Behavior may reflect self-esteem (for example, assertiveness-shyness, confidence-caution).
Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as an enduring personality characteristic (trait self-esteem), though normal, short-term variations (state self-esteem) occur.
Self-esteem can apply specifically to a particular dimension (for example, "I believe I am a good writer, and feel proud of that in particular") or have global extent (for example, "I believe I am a good person, and feel proud of myself in general")."
- Wikipedia
(Note: there is considerably more material on the subject of Self-Esteem available on Wikipedia).
Self Esteem
Simple Term, Complex Relationships
From the above definition, it is evident that Self Esteem:- Derives from our Core Beliefs about ourselves ("I am competent - incompetent"),
- Is strongly tied to our emotional well-being ("I am proud / ashamed of myself"),
- Is expressed in our behaviour ("assertiveness / shyness", and
- Ranges from highly specific to global in character
Self Esteem Interventions
Analogous to Gratitude Theory
In the relatively new field of Positive Psychology, specifically, studies of Gratitude Theory, researchers have proposed that individuals have a "Set Point" or level of Happiness based on three factors. We have a genetic predisposition to Happiness, comprising between 40 and 70% of our Set Point. Life circumstance contributes another 10% to our Set-Point of Happniess, leaving approximately 20-50% subject to Intentional Activity (or "Interventions"), affecting our level of Happiness. A variety of active interventions have been proposed for use in order to increase one's level of Happiness.With regard to Self Esteem, I propose that the major contributor to an analogous Set-Point would be the Core Belief System derived through life experience. (Note: to my knowledge, there are no studies analogous to those undertaken under "Gratitude Theory" pertaining to Self Esteem. I am simply drawing an analogy between a "Core Belief System" with regard to Self Esteem and the "Genetic Component" with regard to "Happiness" as being the predominant control on a "Set-Point"). However, in contrast to a Happiness Set-Point, a Self Esteem Set-Point could be modified by changing aspects of the underlying "Core Belief System".
The Core Belief System
Modifying Aspects of Your Belief System
Your Core Belief System expresses itself in the manner in which you behave in any given situation. If your Core Belief System contains a strong component of assertiveness, you will express that as an assertive individual. Similarly, if you have a weak component of assertiveness, you behave in a shy manner. (Note: this is a very simple example, as one can be assertive in some situations (i.e. a business meeting) and shy in others (i.e. a date). Emotions have a complex set of circumstances to which they respond.) However, if we think back over our lives, we might be able to discern changes in our behaviour as we have matured, as our Core Belief System has been modified as our life circumstances have changed. Much of this change has been passive, the result of living life in a Reactive manner. By engaging life in a Proactive manner, using Affirmations, Mental Programming and/or other techniques, we might consciously effect change on our Core Belief System, in turn producing changes in our behavioural response to a given situation. Self Esteem Worksheets
Internet Resources
The following are some examples of Self-Esteem resources I found on the Internet with regard to Self Esteem Worksheets.
They are simply intended to start you thinking about the realities in your life, having you challenge your perceptions by directing your thoughts on the actual circumstances.

- Self Esteem at pppst.com
- This is a very good site with some valuable resources for the visitor. In particular, I suggest a review of the PowerPoint presentation on Self Esteem.
Suggested "Interventions" incude: Setting Goals, Mental Programming, use of Constructive Criticism and hints at Affirmations. - Self Esteem Worksheets - Site 1
- There are two worksheets comprised of: 1) Getting to Know Yourself and 2) Listening to Other People. The worksheets consist of a series of questions intended to direct your thoughts to the realities in your life. (Note: Item #3 in Worsheet #2 is very similar to a "Gratitude Journal" intervention under Gratitude Theory.
- Self Esteem Worksheets - Site 2
- This site is a little more substantive with, again, two sets of questions intended to direct our thoughts to how we thnk about 1) ourselves and 2) our interaction with others. This site goes a little farther in having you thnk about your Positive Attributes (Accomplishments, Compliments and Positive Feedback, Skills and Positive Personality Traits).
- Self Esteem Worksheets - Site 3
- A very basic site, similar to the above.

- Integrated Success Program Group on Yahoo
- This group was created to discuss thoughts, opinions and interpretations originating, in part, from the classic personal development texts (James Allen, Charles Haanel, Napoleon Hill, etc.) and other related topics of interest (i.e. Law of Attraction, Creative Visualization).
Researching the power of the mind and, more specifically, the sub-conscious mind over the past twenty years has allowed me to discover of many gems of wisdom buried in these timeless texts, as well as more recently published texts. The recent release of "The Secret" has had the result of drawing considerable attention to the "LAW OF ATTRACTION", however, I believe the process underlying its application to one's life was missing from the movie.
Contrary to the hype attending release of "The Secret", the LAW OF ATTRACTION is not a recent discovery in metaphysics, nor has it been actively suppressed by the Church or hidden societies. It simply passed into relative obscurity through the passage of time. It has been, and remains, available to everyone who searches for it and is willing to actually apply it to their lives.
The formula is available, and is, in all likelihood, well known to most. In its simplest form, it was concisely summarized as follows:
Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives;
he who seeks finds;
and to him who knocks, the door will be opened
Matthew 7:7 (Luke (11:9) NIV
In short, visualize your desired outcome, then take the appropriate action to receive its manifestation. ACTION is an integral, necessary part of the three part formula to realize (manifest) your desired outcome.
