You can get every thing you will need at the local hardware store.

Inexpensive energy solutions can begin with a trip to your local hardware store. Here is a short list of some things that can help you save energy and reduce those costly energy bills.

* A/C and Furnace filters
* Weather strip
* Caulk
* Foam outlet and light switch gaskets (like are used on outside gfi outlets and light switches)
* CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulbs these use 2/3rds less power

While your at the hardware store take a look around you may be able to find more inexpensive energy solutions to help you save even more.

What to do for inexpensive energy solutions

Now what to do with those items from the hardware store.

First make sure you change your A/C and furnace filters at least once a month, more often if you live in a dusty environment like the desert. Changing your filter on a regular basis can save you 1-2 % of your energy costs.

Next Seal all your leaky doors and windows with the weather strip or caulk. Interior outlets can be a leaky area if they were not properly insulated (insulation around the box in the wall that hold the outlet or light switch) at the time your home was built. These leaks can be sealed a little better by removing the cover and placing a foam gasket behind the cover. Save up to 2 % of your energy costs. Caulking, weather stripping and foam gasket are the most inexpensive energy solutions there are.

Replace all the light bulbs in your light fixtures that are used the most and are on for long periods of time with CFL bulbs on bulbs that are on for 10 hours a day this will save you 2 % If you change all your bulbs to CFL bulbs you can save even more.

These are just a few inexpensive energy solutions that can help you to reduce you energy bills.

These Are Not Inexpensive Energy Solutions.

But are good energy saving investments that you can consider if you intend to remodel or replace your appliances in the near future.

The following are not inexpensive energy solutions, but they can pay for themselves in no time. Whenever replacing appliances always try to get the most energy efficient ones as they will save you more in the long run.

Lets start with appliances. If you plan on purchasing new appliances check the efficiency ratings before you buy. Try to choose the appliances that have the highest energy ratings these will save you the most amount of money. If you're A/C unit is still in good shape and doesn't need to be replaced at least replace the thermostat with a programmable thermostat. Have your duct work inspected for leaks or restrictions which can cause that A/C unit to run excessively, if any leaks or restrictions are found have them repaired by a licensed contractor.

Whole house fans are permanently installed in your attic. They draw cool air in through the windows of your house and exhaust the hot air into the attic where it will go out the attic vents. Turn it on after sundown and the outside temperature has dropped below 80 degrees leave it run until the house has cooled down then shut it off. Turn it back on in the early morning to help keep the A/C from running first thing in the morning. While this is not an inexpensive energy solutions this can save up to 5 %.

Window Film May Be Considered to Be Inexpensive Energy Solutions

Window film can save you more money than you think is possible.

Having window tinting done is not going to be an inexpensive energy solution unless you tackle the job yourself.

Another place you can save 5-10 % and may be considered to be an inexpensive energy solution is on window film. Window film will help keep your house cooler in the summer and reduce the amount your AC will have to run. Other added benefits of window film are, it will reduce exposure to UV rays and cut down on glare. Lastly check your insulation in your attic, if it is rated at R-19 or less consider adding insulation to bring it to at least R-30 level. Between changing your thermostat, sealing your duct work or removing restrictions and raising the level of your insulation in your attic you can save as much as 10-20 % on your energy bills.

These are just a few inexpensive energy solutions and some good savings investments that you can do to help you save energy and reduce those monthly energy costs.

This Is Not Considered Inexpensive Energy Solutions

But to save more money you may want to consider renewable energy sources like solar or wind power.
