How I Use Inktense Water Soluble Ink Pencils In Conjuction With Watercolor Pencils

Whenever I visit a major art supply company I always purchase a few random items of products that strike my fancy. At best I may I discover a love for a new medium, Or at the very least I keep the creativity flowing through experimentation.

Recently I purchased some open stock of Derwent's Inktense water soluble ink pencils. After trying them I immediately went out and got some more. Now while I haven't created a painting from start to finish using only these pencils. I have found them to be hugely helpful as a time saving device when used in conjunction with my watercolor pencils. The intensity of pigment they lay down in one pass is awesome.

Inktense comes in a range of 71 brilliant colors, plus a non-soluble outliner (which I haven't tried) that allows you to draw outlines that are permanent. For the most part I use them just as I do my watercolor pencils and intermix them often.

Tips For Using Inktense Pencils

What The Manufacturers Of InkTense Have To Say

Derwent's Inktense Water-Soluble Ink Pencils

Derwent company makes various water soluble media and their inktense pencils are one of their latest creations.

Pencil to ink in just one wash

Pen and ink offers strong, intense colour combined with a translucent effect. Now you can enjoy these distinctive qualities in an easy to use pencil. Inktense has a firm, blendable texture and comes in a range of 71 brilliant colours, plus a non-soluble outliner which allows you to draw outlines that are permanent.

The colours can be blended together with a slightly wetted paintbrush while applying an overall light wash creates a vivid, ink-like translucency. Derwent Inktense pencils are incredibly versatile and can be used to create a diverse range of art from Japanese Manga to vibrant silk painting; traditional watercolours to stunning botanical illustrations.

Mostly I Use Inktense Pencils For My Base Colors

Using Inktense For The Foundation of Your Painting

Spanish Gold Work In Progress Painting By Mona MajorowiczInktense Pencils are truly water soluble ink. Applied dry, once water is added they become a liquid medium that give you an intense translucent color wash. However once they dry the color then becomes permanent making them ideal for using in conjunction with other mediums when applied over the top.

In my case I'm using more traditional watercolor pencils, but watercolor paint, colored pencils or pastels could also be used.

Inktense Color used For Dark Brown Background Are:
#1920 Brown madder
#1930 Dark Chocolate
#111 Deep Indigo

Additionally to the color mentioned above for the background wash I also used:
#0820 Peacock Blue
#0610 Red Violet

for working around the area where the main was going to be put in. The violet and mauve added a softness to the blue and brown background.

Some Quick Tips For Using Inktense Water Soluble Ink Pencils

Making painting with Inktense Pencils just a little easier.

Because the premise behind these are that the dry pigment when wetted become liquid ink. It stands to reason that once dry, like ink it is pretty much immovable, So with that in mind:

* Rinse brushes after using. Do not let ink pigment set up and dry in the bristles.

* DO NOT moisten the tip of the pencil in your mouth. (I have been known to do this with watercolor pencils because they are non toxic) Inktense carries no such label so should be "considered and treated" as toxic.

* It is best not to wear light colored clothes when working with Inktense pencils. Much like the ink stains your substrate, they also stain your clothing. This is probably one of those common sense things most people already know. But since watercolor pencils are such a clean and dry medium it has never been an issue with them. Inktense pencils it is.

* They are indeed intense when it comes to laying in color. So it is best to start of with a "less is better" approach until you get a feel for them. I find them excellent for laying in backgrounds as they require far fewer layers of color to give you that rich tone.

Another Example Of Using Inktense Pencils For A Under Layer Wash

The base color browns are done with Inktense pencils.

My Giraffe Painting WOrk In Progress

On all of the brown area of this giraffe painting I used Inktense Pencils to create the color wash under layer.

This Image shows all of the steps for working in water soluble media.
* From line drawing to color wash underlayer (the right hand giraffe forehead area)
* To finished area. (left hand giraffe face) where all the tiny little hair details have been added with a sharpened dry pencils.

Inktense Colors Used For color wash under layer are:
#118 Baked Earth
#0240 Sienna Gold
#1920 Madder Brown

Substrates To Be Used With Inktense Pencils

Using Suede Matboard With Your Inktense Pencils

Use water sparingly with InktenseoOn suede

Both of the paintings illustrating this page are done on suede mat board. Inktense works really well with this medium if the water used is kept to a minimum. I recommend using light colored or white suede when working with watercolor pencils or inktense pencils.

Using Inktense Pencils With Arches Watercolor Paper

Inktense can be used in the same way as watercolor pencils on watercolor paper.

I tend to prefer to use Hot Press watercolor paper because of it's smooth texture. For the detailed work that I do, I need a smooth surface to create the look of hair. I find cold press or rough tends to grab too much dry pigment in the divets and then doesn't achieve a smooth wash when wet. Depending on your style of working though you could probably achieve some interesting results with either cold press or rough papers.
