INNER DEMONS is a horror novel by dark genre writer Kody Boye.

Told from the viewpoint of young Dean McAllen, it follows his transition from small, Mormon-town Idaho to Denver, Colorado. Once he moves in with his aunt, life starts to change for the better... or so it seems. Dean meets a guy named Brad at a dollar store who, at first, mistakes him for a full-grown man and asks for his number. Though it is soon revealed that Dean ISN'T a legal adult, Brad decides to keep the relationship private and between the two of them. The book focuses on the relationship the two experience as a young gay couple, as well as on the 'visitors' brad gets.

Early in the novel, Brad calls Dean in the middle of the night complaining about 'doorbell-ditching teenagers' that knock on his door and throw rocks at his apartment windows. What's worse is that, while Brad seems to believe what he's going through is something he needs to worry about, Dean isn't sure. And, because of this, Dean starts to wonder whether or not Brad is as normal as he seems. This sense of dreadfulness soon turns to paranoia as the reader is forced to decide whether or not Brad has an actual problem or not, keeping them guessing until the very end.

Origins

The author claims that INNER DEMONS came to him during a fit of depression in late 2007. While dealing with problems with his weight and with his personal character, Boye says he was lying in his downstairs bedroom when, out of nowhere, a mental image manifested itself into the form of a man, who appeared next to him in bed. Lying beside the author as if it were natural for thoughts to become real, this man, who would later become Brad in INNER DEMONS and its subsequent sequels, started telling Boye about the trouble he was having with his boyfriend, who would later be known as Dean.

At first, Boye wasn't entirely sure whether or not the manifestation was caused by stress, depression, or something else, but he soon found that the image and the story Brad had told would not leave him alone. Oftentimes, he would get out of bed in the middle of the night to write down certain scenes or jot down notes about what the manifestation (Brad) was telling him. The images and thoughts became so frequent throughout the last days of November and through December that he started writing the novel in January 2008, for fear that the manifestation would leave and what Boye considered his 'best story idea' would be gone forever.

Online Serialization

Near the end of January 2008, Boye began to toy with the idea of releasing another, full-length serial novel. While his previous attempts at serial novels were, at the most, failures (his two previous serials, including LAMIA, which is a novella in Boye's collection PLAY DEAD, only had its first part published, while an apocalyptic novel called MIASMA never got further than one or two entries,) Boye figured he could make the novel work if he set himself to particular publishing dates instead of trying to post chapter after chapter.

Deciding to post chapters three days a week (one chapter per day,) Boye began to draw attention to himself with the story of a young gay man dealing with a disturbed boyfriend. Readers often identified with the theme of breaking away on your own and finding the love of your life. Its popularity rose quickly over the duration of the year of 2008.

INNER DEMONS' serialization was completed in April (around the author's birthdate.)

Rewrites, Edits and Posting Style

While the novel had been nearly halfway written when serialization began, Boye did his best to clean his work by himself, going through the novel chapter by chapter on days of posting. After serialization ended in April, he made a positive effort to improve what he had written.

Over the next few months, DEMONS went through many small rewrites and edits. It wasn't until later that year that the extra content was added to the novel. Boye credits Deedee Davis, an artist friend, for her suggestions and her line edits. He says 'the novel wouldn't have been the same had Deedee not read through it.'

The extra content added into the novel made it more sinister near the beginning, and also lengthened the 'journey' Dean undertakes near the very end of the book.

The blog-style posting of DEMONS was removed after Boye had difficulties reposting the over one-hundred chapters the novel contained. He credits using outside posting sources to his problem, saying that it's much easier to publish a serial week by week, instead of uploading all of it at once. Though he had his troubles with the blog posting itself, he hosted the PDF through Wordpress for a good while before deciding to track his downloads using Lulu (which, if set as a free download, does not require readers to have an account to download the novel.)

'Support Pride' and other GLBT-Related Postings

Later in 2008, Boye became interested in fighting for the rights of GLBT individuals. Because of the gay marriage ban that had been passed in California, Boye started off his 'Support Pride' page (which is a collaboration of essays written about GLBT issues) by posting a letter to an organization that, quote, 'protected (traditional) marriage' (though he crossed out the organization's name for legal purposes.)

Throughout the year, he continued to keep track on GLBT news. Some of his more popular posts include 'Top Models and Transgender Women,' in which he discusses America's Next Top Model contestant Isis, who was originally a man before she went on the show; and 'The 'Choice' of Being Gay,' in which he offered several different explanations as to how individuals came to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transsexual. In the essay, he offered several suggestions, including (but not limited to,) hereditary traits, environmental issues, upbringing and home life (which delved into an example of how an abused young man could become gay because he felt he needed another man in his life to replace an abusive father.)

The PROUD page, which had been created in the attempt to get GLBT art submissions to help artists promote their work, did not succeed (though it still remains on the site.) Boye has left the page up in the hope that someone will come along, want to get their work noticed, and send him a photograph, drawing, or some other kind of art that helps conveys the GLBT community in a positive or supportive light. Submission requirements for art may be found by clicking the 'PROUD' button in the sidebar of the Inside Your Inner Demons blog.

Future Plans

Though there has been no set decision and no concrete plan made, Boye has considered self-publishing INNER DEMONS (and its sequels) through CreateSpace. For the time being, this is only an idea (though postive feedback from readers has driven him to at least think about self-publishing the novel[s].)

Reviews

The story line was incredible as what seemed like dream sequences unfolded, but exactly what they are is in question for much of the story. I loved how the characters are real to life with problems that are easily understood today. This is one book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys strange situations, drama, young love, and situations that are inexplicable until almost the end. Thanks go to Mr. Boye for an extraordinary book!
