Empowerment Songs & Pride Anthems

My daughter got home from a Rachel's Challenge assembly today (3.14.11). It got me thinking of all of the recent hit songs that focus on inspiring people, especially teens and young kids, to treat others with kindness and love themselves for who they are.

There have always been inspirational pop songs, but they do tend to come in waves when the world needs them most. This last trend seeming to come out of the It Gets Better Project of September 2010.

My Top 5 Picks

Katy Perry - Firework

Like a waste of space
You're original
Cannot be replaced

If you only knew
What the future holds
After a hurricane
Comes a rainbow"

P!nk - Perfect
Released: December 14, 2010

"Pretty, pretty please
Don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than
Less than perfect

Pretty, pretty please
If you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing
You are perfect to me"

Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Released: February 11, 2011

"I'm beautiful in my way,
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret,
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way"

Selena Gomez - Who Says
Released: March 8, 2011

"You made me insecure
Told me I wasn't good enough
But who are you to judge
When you're a diamond in the rough

I'm sure you got some things
You'd like to change about yourself
But when it comes to me
I wouldn't want to be anybody else"

Adam Lambert - Aftermath
Released: March 10, 2011

"Wanna scream out, no more hiding
Don't be afraid of what's inside
Gonna tell ya you'll be alright
In the aftermath

Anytime anybody pulls you down
Anytime anybody says you're not allowed
Just remember you are not alone
In the aftermath"

It is true that the lyrics of most songs find a way to strike someones emotional side with the ability to relate with that person. With inspirational songs, it seems that everyone can relate.

I definitely agree with "Firework" and "F**king Perfect". "Firework" strikes a chord with me and has continued to be a favorite of mine since it came out; despite it being overplayed on the radio, I don't get sick of it. I relate to "F**king Perfect" 'cause for me it describes my relationship with my best friend and his sometimes low self-esteem...it's the kind of song you send people when they're feeling down, and I love that. Great lens, I definitely have to check out the other songs listed here!

Great idea for a lens! I love hearing songs like these and was just talking today about how much I like Pink's song Perfect. But I do wish she hadn't released the explicit version of it. I don't object to explicit lyrics in general, but "f***ing perfect" doesn't seem to send the same message as plain ol' "perfect."
