A Personal Guide to Intellectual Resources

Imagine one day without electricity in your life. If Benjamin Franklin had never experimented to fly the kite during the lightning storm, or Da'Vinci's masterpieces, 'The Last Supper' and 'Mona Lisa' had never made it to the canvas. Ever wondered reading literature without any Shakespeare?

These men of exceptional intellect are pioneers in the history of mankind. If it wasn't for tools such as ink pens, canvases, paint brushes, journals and books, much of what was said above would have been appallingly true. Whether it be 16th century or 21st century, innovation, creativity and invention are dependent on tools and resources. You cannot remember all your spontaneous thoughts and ideas. An experiment needs to be theorized, performed and recorded. Ancient and modern day tools listed below are a requisite to inspiration, organization and devotion necassary for an intellectual living.

"Know Thyself;" - Delphic Oracle

Complete this sentence:

Life is full of......

How would you do it? In what way would you do it? Shockingly most of us already know the answers but keep an uncertain approach and it remains an unanswered, strayed thought in our mind.

If I write this somewhere, I am inscribing my thoughts (certain or uncertain) to what I truly believe in. The more comes out of me, the more I am going to be that person who believes in himself. Writing in journals has it perks. Just the other day I was refreshed to read my entry from the day my neighbors moved out:

"The old neighbors were moving out yesterday, when I saw two old Hispanic men carrying a stream of furniture out of the house and wheeling it on to the truck. The neighbors had an uneven bricked floor which upon the men's efforts doubled in the painstaking heat of the South. Little by little, they moved in some of the biggest furniture of a family of five and three immense television sets. The truck was parked reverse on a steep paved driveway where the truck's backdoor tended to incline. So out of the two short men, one had to climb the truck every time they pulled furniture out of the house. The owner of the goods, a middle-aged small business owner coordinated everything. His self-indulgence showed in the amount of goods that were being transferred. He was very meticulous even to his most undervalued possessions. The authoritarian in him lashed out as the two men helplessly carried furniture and were pointed and directed by every member of the family. If one orders to move kitchen items, while the other one demands to know if they had moved a box of personal items. It seemed at times as if they were actually being treated like personal slaves.

What would I have done? I was good as a dead person. I did nothing. Time to time, I kept peeking through my window and then eventually I went to water my lawn, as an excuse. As it got darker, the humidity peaked and you could feel the dryness of weather in your throat. The men seemed to have taken a shower in their own sweat. The bright yellow flood light in front of the house, shimmered the droplets on their faces. They often glanced at my activities, but in the equality of work, they were far superior at what they did.

What they got paid, in front of the whole street, my heart just stopped beating. I couldn't believe the unworthy reward that was given to them. It was easily distinguishable, the two hundred dollar bills and a twenty if they disposed a huge bed frame on their return. They quickly divided the money as they sat inside their truck. I saw the old man taking off his cap in complete disappointment, nodding and complaining. He was talking to himself and it was unpleasant.

I just could not believe what I witnessed. I went inside in complete shock. I drank a glass full of water and stood near my stove pondering upon everything related to these events. I had enough cynical thoughts to confront the neighbors. But then I stopped. I came with up another solution to these boiling emotions. It was such an ambiguous feeling, that I had to choose and categorize what I was going through. It still remains like an unknown jolt inside my heart. I am glad I have these empathetic feelings. I reached inside my wallet and insisted to offer the men some money. I was paid this Friday including a second quarterly bonus, besides I also keep frugal approach and follow a stringent savings plan. I could afford to give them atleast another hundred for the work they did, I wanted to help. I ran outside with my empty glass, oblivious to any object in my path. I have a very bad habit of leaving shoes near my door. And to my chagrin, I was caught in my own foolishness. The door was already open, as I ran, my old brown, rugged sneakers were right at the entrance. my left foot stepped right behind the sneakers and then I stumbled. My balance was completely off thrown while an autonomous right arm kept the glass above the ground. It happened in quarters of a second. I stood up ignoring my tumult as I saw the white truck already at the end of the road. I took a deep breath in the middle of the street. Brushing myself off, I realized something......(con't) "

Electronic Dictionary

What's the meaning of......?

While reading 'Crime & Punishment' by Dostoevsky, it became difficult to keep abreast of the story. I was unable to comprehend sentences that contributed greatly to the story line (besides Russian names). I did have my laptop where I used to look up word meaning at merriam-webster.com. Places where I couldn't transport my laptop, I found it very tough to read literature.

The electronic dictionary has made it even more interesting to read and enjoy the most complex literatures. I couldn't believe small words gave sentences a whole new meaning. Another advantage to owning an electronic dictionary is that it fills your vocabulary vault. I could easily distinguish my old essays with new ones.

Harvard Classics

A Bookshelf without one Classic is a disgrace.

Harvard Classics are a 51-volume anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot that was first published in 1909. These are available in almost all universities and schools. I can spot a Harvard classic in any library through the distinctive red and speckled hardcover with the Golden Harvard Press logo.

The classics are also available through numerous other publishers. Works of Benjamin Franklin, Emerson, Shakespeare, David Hume, Machiavelli, Descartes, Darwin, are few names listed from the pool of collection. Harvard Classics are comprised of predominant knowledge that inundate readers. I recommend reading at least one volume, once a month.

Voice recorders are optional but effective tools. It is of use only if you have poor listening skills. The tool captures the sound and provides playback of keynotes or the whole lecture (depends how you have recorded it). I have personally augmented my listening skills through the use of voice recorders. I record most of my professor's comprehensive and thorough lectures on it. What I missed, I play it at my comfort and learn at any time. Some voice recorders are now digital and record up to four hours of conversations

Telescope

For heavenly inspirations

The night sky is my biggest inspiration. Every night before entering my house, I stand outside my porch. To get an even closer look, I bought a beautiful Galileo Telescope which offered its use. The stars became brighter and the moon sparkled through the 70mm magnifying lens. The use of telescope is a very meticulous job. Every inch of stand and knobs have to be carefully worked in order to get a subtle view of the objects in the sky. Astronomy is an interesting leisure. My friends are amused when we go out camping and I pinpoint and name the different celestial objects.

The SpaceProbe 130ST EQ is a rich-field Newtonian reflector with a tube only 24" long compared to the 33" tube length of the standard 130 EQ. The focal length of the ST's 130mm (5.1") primary mirror is 650mm (f/5), producing a wider field of view and brighter images for a given eyepiece focal length. The diffraction-limited parabolic primary mirror is the same type used on much larger reflectors costing substantially more.

Liechtenstein is one of the tiniest German speaking countries located in Central Europe between Austria and Switzerland. The capital of the country is Vaduz and It is the last remnant of the Holy Roman Empire. Locking Medievil Chest

Keep some of it private

My great grandfather's watch, old, tanned and wrinkled photos of my parents when they were young, three ancient coins, torn pages from my deepest journal entries and lots of memorable objects in my life. These are some of the contents of my locking chest. I believe that somethings are kept preserved until a certain time when they serve their purpose.

Spencerian Handwritting Workbook

System of Practical Penmanship

The elegant signature of John Hancock on the 'Declaration of Independence' inspired the young Platt Roger Spencer to distinguish a career in penmanship. He developed a system of handwriting which dominated schools for almost a century and he spent his whole life teaching it.

Writing is almost as important as speaking, as a medium for communication. It is said,
"Writing is secondary power of speech, and they who cannot write are in part dumb." My writing since adolescence has been a rubbish mess of awkward cursive writing. I envied people with beautiful handwriting whether it be cursive or not. Therefore couple a years ago, I purchased the Spencerian Workbook. I become a man of great detail, and these set of five workbooks and one theory offered minuscule elements of Spencerian writing. Since I have been practicing almost every week and perfecting my movements. This workbook is truly a gem and has significantly altered my inscription.

Language Lessons

Je Parle, Francais. Et Vous?

The translation for above is, "I speak French, do you?"

I am truly learning new languages to unveil the originality in literature. I am a deep aficionado of foreign literature, especially Latin and French. I believe reading literature in their original words of the author, provides chance for a conversation with the greatest minds of the past. Latin is one of my first languages that I learned besides English. There were terms in English, French and Spanish derived from Latin. Although it is an obsolete language, much of the Latin literature still exists.

Jean-François Champollion is the greatest inspiration of mine while learning any langugage. By the age of 16 he had mastered a dozen languages and had read a paper before the Grenoble Academy concerning the Coptic language. By 20 he could also speak Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Amharic, Sanskrit, Avestan, Pahlavi, Arabic, Syriac, Chaldean, Persian, Ethiopic, and Chinese in addition to his native French. Champollion was the only man to decipher the Rosetta Stone.

More famouse people who knew more than one language:
Benjamin Franklin, Helen Keller, Cleopatra, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare

Inspirational Art/Photography

For the Artist in You.

_________________________________________________________________________
I have two Van Gogh's (Yeah right original, I wish!) hung adjacent to each other and another framed, black and white photography of a beautiful wolf in the middle of the woods staring straight at ya. All three works are of great importance to me. When I feel like I am alone and frustrated, my eyes always circle around the three works of art and provide tranquility.

Newspaper or Magazine Subscription

Dominate conversations with up to date information.

During an argument in my business communication's class, majority of the students were debating over the fact that students with excellent GPAs get better jobs while the minority argumented over students with less than perfect GPAs but who have better social skills get even better jobs. While I listened to both sides, the same morning I read 'The BusinessWeek.'

BusinessWeek has a nice one-page section in their issues called 'BTW (by the way),' which I piously read. Ironically the content I read was so coherent with the discussions in my class, that I silenced the class without a counter attack on my statement. I still remember the facts from the BTW;

Title: It pays to be friendly
My Summary: Sociologist at the University of Illionios - Champagne conducted a researched where they tracked 11,000 students from 10th grade to 10 years after thier high school graduation. What they concluded was that students described by their teachers as conscientious, motivated and were able to well relate to peers and adults, earned on average $3,200 more than the students with equal grades but with less social skills.

Almonds

For the precious snacking moments

Almonds are a rich source of Vitamin E, containing 24 mg per 100 g. They are also rich in monounsaturated fat, one of the two "good" fats responsible for lowering LDL cholesterol.

Claimed health benefits of almonds include improved complexion, improved movement of food through the colon (feces) and the prevention of cancer. Recent research associates the inclusion of almonds in the diet with elevating the blood levels of high density lipoproteins and of lowering the levels of low density lipoproteins.

In Ayurveda, an ancient system of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent, almond is considered a nutritive for brain and nervous system. It is said to induce high intellectual level and longevity. Almond oil is called Roghan Badam in both Ayurveda and Unani Tibb (the Greco-Persian System of Medicine). It is extracted by cold process and is considered a nutritive aphrodisiac both for massage and internal consumption. Recent studies have shown that the constituents of almond have anti-inflammatory, immunity boosting, and anti-hepatotoxicity effects.

Any Musical Instrument

Keeps your brain active and creative.

Playing an instrument and listening to music are two different notions. Listening only requires us to encode the song while playing an instrument synthesizes all our senses in to one uniform production. From learning to interpret the musical symbols, to training your fingers to correctly match the music sheets, creating music refreshens our mind and maintains the one golden virtue of man that is 'creativity.'

The best part about playing a guitar is that I learned how not to give up. Sometimes I spend hours and hours of recitation until I get the correct sound. I recommend having to learn at least one instrument and It's a great way to add value to life.
